Could any of you kind people help me find from where in the City of Dublin my great grandmother Rosanna McGrath was born/resided. She was born to Thomas McGrath and Margaret Hyley at Dublin in 1864 and emigrated to Australia in 1886. Her father Thomas McGrath is shown by Griffith's Valuation as farming several acres of rocks in the Wicklow Gap prior to moving to Dublin but, apart from the family holding very strong Republican views, more I do not know.

Thanks for any help you can offer

  • I think your Rose/Rosanna was born in Blessington Co. Wicklow just before the start of civil records in 1863. There's a possible match for her baptism on the index of RootsIreland pay-website.

Maybe Dublin city was where this McGrath family lived later, or just before they emigrated.

p.s. I suspect the Thomas McGrath listed on Griffith's a Athdown townland, in Kilbride civil parish would be a better match for this family. This Thomas Mcgrath is shown with a larger property with over 40 aces of land, and this section of the valuation is dated 1853. Kilbride was one of the civil parishes covered by the Catholic parish of Blessington, and this Athdown townland is located to the east of Blessignton and Kilbride village and quite close to the border with Co. Dublin (Wicklow gap is futher to the south)

  • Thankyou for your assistance. Other family members of mine put them near Glendalough prior to moving to Dublin and the Wicklow Gap connect is the only mention I can find within cooee of Glendalough. Cheers I will have a good think about your information.
