  • quick question about your Bridget - is O'Hanlon her birth surname or a married name ?

If she married the place to start the search is with a record of that, as it should show her father's name and occupation, which you can use to search back further. If she married can you post her maiden name and husband's name, and approx. dates of any children you know of ?

  • G'day

O'Hanlon was her maiden name so she was unmarried, I know she passed away in Feb 1970 (got this from national archives) would love to know if she siblings or her parents name but definitely her dad came from Dundalk Louth, but with so may O'Hanlons in Co.Louth it is hard to find much more, but her dad's name would definitely be a bonus.

    Thank you for responding

  • Unfortunately this Bridget is going to be very difficult to trace with any certainty without marriage details.

Do you have a death cert for Bridget ? if so what details are on her death cert regarding reported age, address, place of death and name of informant

EDIT : There's a possible probate calendar entry in 1970 for a Bridget O'Hanlon of 38 Merlyn Rd. Ballsbridge, Dublin where the executor is a Joseph O'Hanlon, draper who could be related. It's quite a large estate, over £30,000 and it appears that it may be Intestate, or an administration, i.e. no will or an invalid one - You can apply to the National Archives to see what documentation they might have on that..

  • dont know if you've already seen the death for Bridget (aka Polly) of 'Dublin and Dundalk' in the Irish Independent Newspaper, it states she died in Louth Co. Hospital rather than Dublin, and also that she was a retired teacher, late of St. Mary's Road, Dundalk, and the funeral at St. Nicholas Church Dundalk and burial at St. Patrick's, Dundalk, no details of any family in the notice - maybe a Dundalk or Co. Louth newspaper may have had a more detailed notice

  • looks like the Dublin and Dundalk addresses are the crucial clues with this one... Irish Press 24 Dec. 1965, has a death notice for a Margaret O'Hanlon the previous day, with an address of 28 Merlyn Rd., daughter of the late James and Rose O'Hanlon of St. Mary's Rd., Dundalk. Deeply regretted by her sorrowing sister, relatives and friends. Mass at Merrion Rd. Dublin and burial to be at St. Patrick's Dundalk

let me know if you have not seen either of these notices, and I'll post images.

p.s. there's a little more detail in a 3 year anniversary notice for Margaret (aka Peg), which mentions that she was former Principle of Knockbridge N.S. (National School), Dundalk

  • Thank you ever so much, yes the family did live at Merlyn Road Ballsbridge, I have seen the will that you mentioned, I thought she lived in Dublin as on the will it stated address as 28 Merlyn Rd Ballsbridge, I guess she must have gone back to Louth.
I would really appreciate those newspaper images that you have mentioned, I have sent to the National Archives for a copy of the will, so hopefully I will get some more information with that.

Once again I really do appreciate your help.

  • no problem - you should include the vital clues re the parents names on your Dundalk post ...and also dates of death and approximate ages for Bridget and Rose. If you dont have death certs it might be a good idea to start your search with those to establish age/approx year of birth.  They are too recent for the online BMD index, but the GRO should be able to help.

p.s. how are these O'Hanlons related to you - neither seem to have married and just the two sisters are mentioned ?

  • G'day

From the information you provided with  the newspaper insertions I was able to go onto the Irish Census for both 1901 and1911 and find the family, I knew Bridget and Margaret dad was called James but i didn't know their mothers name but i got the family on the census living in both scotland and Co.Louth.

The two sisters are my late grandfathers cousins however there was actually at least 8 children in their family but I guess the rest have all passed on. I do know Bridget was born in 1896 and Margaret was born in 1900 as per the Irish Census.

My next quest is to find two sisters grandmother in Louth, I know their grandfather is also named James( like their dad) but with so many James O Hanlon's in Co.Louth I am trying to locate their grandmother as that will be a better lead to follow I think.

You have been awesome with your help and time I am really grateful to you and when I posted on Co. Louth I have acknowledged your assisstance.

    Kind Regards

  • Looking for information on Bernard O'Hanlon killed @ 144 Brunswick Street Dublin on the 14th March 1921, he was just 18 years old and originally came from Dundalk and his name is on the Four Courts Roll of Honour, I know he was killed at a siege but any newspaper articles relating to this would be appreciated.

    Thank you in advance
