Hi,
I am trying to figure out which Dublin civil parish my ancestor would be from so that I will know which civil parish to "join" on this website.
The baptism record of my ancestor, Jeremiah Shannon, says "Dublin (RC) June 1814 St. Nicholas." I am not sure if this means St.Nicholas church parish or civil parish, and I am not sure which civil parish it might be St.Nicholas Within or St.Nicholas Without, though Without seems more likely.
From what I can find, there was no Catholic church in the Francis Street area around 1814. But I see written that Franciscans recorded baptism and marriage records from 1742 until 1834 when St. Nicholas of Myra church opened. They must have had a base of operations somewhere around Francis Street, somewhere where baptisms and marriages took place in 1814 and where records were kept.

Hello Jeff,
I went to www.irishgenealogy.ie and searched for and found the record for Jeremiah Shannon in 1814.
I opened this record and scrolled down the page where there is an option to view the original entry.
I viewed this entry and noticed that it was on page 325. I then went up to the address bar and where it said it was numbered 00337, I deleted that and put in 0001. this brought me to the very first page of the book. Here is what is written there
St. Nicholas Without
Francis Street
Baptisms 11 Jan 1767 - 26 Dec 1801
Entries not in chronological order.
As you can see the entries into the book exceeded the dates given. Regarding your question of whether it is in the civil parish or church parish.? The answer is church parish. Civil registration only began in 1864 and then the districts were divided up civilly. Until then all parishes are church parishes.

I appreciate your reply very much. I went to the church records site again and did what you did in changing the page number to get to the title page. I was wishing the other day that I could get to the beginning of the record book to see what book it was, but I had no idea what to do. I never would have thought to do what you did. But now, thanks to you, I have a particular parish finally identified.
Your note about the civil parishes coming into being in 1864 is important for me. I have been spending a lot of time trying to figure out these church and civil parishes in 1814 and also the boundaries of the parishes today, but I have not had much luck --- other than the list of streets in St. Nicholas Without parish on the Irish Ancestors website.
An unusual thing --- When I got online this evening, I checked the Ireland Reaching Out site to see if I had received any messages, but I saw none. Then I routinely checked my email, and there were no messages there either. So I next started doing a google search for a history of the Franciscans in Dublin, trying to figure out if and how they were operating on Francis Street in 1814. That's where I found your reply to me --- in a google search. I must be doing something wrong in the Ireland Reaching Out site to have missed your note there.
