Looking for John Birney – County Dublin.

Hi All:)

Just joined the site, so please be gentle:)

In my research into my Birney’s I have hit the proverbial brick wall, and would appreciate any assistance.

I am also aware that any birth record for John just may not exist!

In particular, what I am looking for is the following:

  1. My Great Great Grandfather, John Birney’s Birthdate and Birthplace.
  2. My Great Grandfather, Francis Birney’s second marriage to Lucy Mullin in 1895.

  1. John Birney, was born c1820, John married Mary Duffy c1843 in Dun Laoghaire, County Dublin. John is noted as been a “Diver”, I would assume at Dun Laoghaire Harbour and maybe somewhere else prior.

John and Mary had nine children, all born in Dun Laoghaire, County Dublin. John died in 1897 and is buried in Deansgrange Cemetery, Dun Laoghaire. John lived all his life in 13 Wellington St, Dun Laoghaire, informant was Luke Birney. Mary died in 1884 and is also buried in Deansgrange. Luke Birney was apparently a well know Sailor in the Dun Laoghaire area.

  1. Francis was born 1850 at 13 Wellington St, Dun Laoghaire. Francis married Mary Grantham, 25 Apr 1878 at St Michael's RC Church, Dun Laoghaire. Francis occupation at the time of his marriage is listed as “Pilot” at  Dun Laoghaire Harbour. Mary Grantham’s Father, William, is also listed as a Sailor on his death registration.

Francis and Mary had 8 children all born in Dun Laoghaire except for the youngest 2 who were born at North Dock, Dublin.

Mary died aged 38 in 1895, Francis remarried to Lucy Mary Mullin in 1897 and they went on to have 6 children, I would assume in the North Wall area of Dublin. Francis died at Grangegorman Hospital in 1926. Lucy died in 1955 in Tolka Rd, Dublin.

Francis and Lucy are both on the 1901 and 1911 census of Ireland, which states on both forms, how long they have been married.

I just find it strange that I cannot source their marriage registration.

Any assistance with John’s Birthplace and Birthdate, and Francis second Marriage would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards

David

  • Hi David

I checked the death record and he was 75 so born 1822 or 21

There are 3 baptism records of John Birneys 1821 + - 1 year on www.rootsireland.ie/

John Berny 1821 Kildare and 2 John Birneys 1820: 1 in Kildare and 1 in Longford; the latter is listed as John William

It costs to view records on rootsireland.ie/

No luck with Francis's marriage however

  • Hi Col

Many thanks for your reply. Maybe one of those John's could be mine!

A few months ago I paid the money on Rootsireland for John's burial (see below). What was interesting is that the informant was Luke Birney.Upon further research I found Luke Birney as being one of the Sons of John (see below), I also found another Luke whom I presume was the Father of Luke and the area was Baldoyle and Donabate, so the plot thickens. These were the only three Luke Birney's in all of Ireland, according to Rootsireland.

Just seems too much of a coincidence with the Luke Birney's but would be great to possibly find out more, which in turn could lead to John's birthplace.

Still seems a mystery as to why Francis Birney'd\s second marriage to Lucy Mullin is not traceable, considering it was around 1897?

  • Hi David, If you look on www.Irishgenealogy.ie you will find the marriage cert for Francis Birney and Lucy Mullin.  They were married in St Lawrence O'Toole Church in the parish ??   North Dublin (sorry cant read parish name). The date of marriage is 8th May 1897, Francis is listed as a Harbour Masters Asst. Father John, Diver.  I'll try and upload a copy here.  Regards, Maria
