Hi Linda,
Thank you for your message.
Have you tried looking in Church records for information? If you can find either James or William?s birth record it will have their parents listed. Most Catholic records are held locally. One website which you may find helpful is the Irish Times, where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. For Portraine/Donabate parish follow this link:
For Church of Ireland records check http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/. The Anglican Record Project is has created an index to their records: http://ireland.anglican.org/cmsfiles/pdf/AboutUs/library/AngRecord/bunclodyunionindex.pdf
As civil registration began in Ireland in 1864, you may also be able to find civil records for the family. Once again, if you can find their birth records, it will give parents names. Once you have this you can then search for their marriage certificate or other records. Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:

The Civil Registration Indexes can also be searched online at Family Search. Here is the link:

Have you tried searching for the brothers in the 1901/1911 census records? These can sometimes give lots of useful information, and perhaps one of them may still have been living with their parents at the time the records were taken. Here is a link:

Some other websites that you may find useful are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx
Irish Times: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/index.htm
Genealogy links: http://www.genealogylinks.net/uk/ireland/dublin/index.html
Dublin Heritage: http://www.dublinheritage.ie/
I hope that this is helpful. Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.
