Hi, 

Sharing what I've managed to discover about Maternal Great-grandparents John L. Monks & Catherine Wall:

  • John L. Monks, b. 1848 in Boston, MA, son of Patrick (Monks) Monaghan (b. 1826 and d. 1876) and Mary Anne Dempsey (1823-1900), both from Clonmellon, Parish Killua, County Westmeath
  • Catherine Wall, b. in 1851 and baptized in Dublin, at St. Catherine's with twin sister, Mary (who soon died?).
  • Catherine's father was Nicholas Wall. Emigration papers say he was born in Drogheda around 1818. (I believe this means Clonalvy civil parish in the Barony of Duleek, Drogheda, County Meath.)
  • Mother was Bridget Burns/Byrne who was baptized in St. Mary's Parish, Drogheda(?), in 1817. She married Nicholas in Dublin in 1838.
  • Nicholas and Bridget lived in Dublin, possibly at 2 Newport Street, and had several children (Joseph, John, Henry, etc.) who were baptized at parish St. Nicholas' (without), Francis Street. They emigrated to US in 1853.
  • Catherine emigrated to the US in 1869, and married John Monks in MA in 1875.

  • I'm wondering of Catherine's emigration date is incorrect since her younger brother Nicholas Richard Wall was born in 1857 in Bath, Maine so his father and mother Nicholas Wall and Bridget Byrne had come to the US before 1857. You have Catherine's emigration date as 1869 so it is unlikely she would not come with her mother sometime before 1857. I know that Nicholas Wall and Joseph Nicholas Wall arrived in Castel Garden, NY in 1853 on a ship named Marathon. I can't find when the rest of the family came over. They all settled in Hingham, MA which you probably already know.
