Hello everyone, My name is NEVILLE MORRISSEY and I live with my wife at SIPPY DOWNS, on Queensland's Sunshine Coast, approximately 100km north of the capital Brisbane. I have been working on my family history for some years and to date have not had a great deal of success with my line. My great great grandfather was RICHARD MORRISSEY, from Gaile. Some records I have obtained indicate that he married one ELLEN MAHER, from MOYCARKEY, on 27/2/1841. They are alleged to have had four children, DANIEL, EDWARD, ANASTASIA and my GGF, John. John was born in Gaile (I dont have a date of birth) however, he was baptised on 29 July 1849. My records show what he emigrated to australia aboard o Australia aboard the Ship”Roma” disembarking at Rockhampton on 11 February 1882 at the age of 29. (Ref. 528 Register No.3, Page 629 IMM-166). He married Hannah Cecilia Lynch the daughter of Daniel Lynch and Ellen Burns. She was born 14 December 1863 in Little Ipswich, Queensland, Australia and died 24 September 1948 at Jandowae, Darling Downs, Queensland, Australia.  She is buried in Jandowae Cemetery, Jandowae, Queensland, Australia. Grave Plot 84. They married in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church at Dalby, Darling Downs, Queensland, Australia on 4 July 1883 John is recorded as a blacksmith, farrier, wheelwright at Jimbour Station. Hannah’s father Daniel was born 1830 in Shanagolden, County Limerick, Ireland and died 8 February 1910 in Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia. Her Mother Ellen was born 1834 in County Clare, Ireland and died 20 September 1892 in Drayton Street, Dalby, Queensland, Australia. They married 28 November 1855 in St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Ipswich, Queensland, Australia.

I understand DANIEL  whose address is listed as Regule, married MARY CARNEY , from Gaile, on 28/02/1870 in Littleton. Mary is listed as a farmers daughter, as her father John Carney was a farmer. Daniels fathers (Richard) occupation is listed as a smith, (i guess blacksmith). Witnesses to the wedding were Michael Maher and Mary Hulahan. Daniel had a daughter, ELLEN MORRISSEY, who married James Murphy of Ardmayle. He was listed as a labourer, she a farmers daughter. James' father was Michael Murphy, labourer from Boherlahan. Wittnesses were Christopher Murphy and Margaret Cullen. I could go on and on, but that will be enough for now. I certainly hope that someone in Tipperary is researching the same family. I would very much like to go further back that Richard and Ellen. I dont know if this will be possible.

I have my line from Richard, all the way through to my lastest grandson MADDOX OLIVER MORRISSEY (2), so if anyone is interested please feel completely free to contact me at sherpet1@bigpond.net.au or nev1947@gmail.com.

I would like to thank Clare Tuohy firstly and Janet Lyons for giving me assistance

  • Hi Nev

As you probably know, the marriage record on www.rootsireland.ie/ does not have Richard or Ellen's parents' names

In addition, I checked all Tipp marriages for Morrissey-Maher in Tipp but Richard & Ellen's was the only 1 from Moycarkey - does that mean she was from there & not Richard as tradition was to marry in bride's church?

There are 38 Ellen Maher baptisms in Moycarkey R C from 1802 to 1899!

There are 33 Richard Morrissey Tipp baptisms from 1792 to 1919; do you have an approximate birth year for him?

No luck with Morrisseys in Tipp in the Irish Censuses up to and including 1851

The Tithe Applotments (free online) have 30 Morrisseys in Tipp 1827-34

Griffiths Valuation (free) has 72 in North Riding Tipp & 2 in South Riding in 1850

There are 14 Morrisseys in Tipp in the Irish phone book - you could drop them a line as one of them may know your line
