I am looking for the ancestors of my Irish family. Jane (b. 3/15/1848) and Thomas (b. 1845) Nevin(s) were children of Hugh Nevin (s) and Marjory Robinson. Jane married George Davison and Thomas married Elizabeth Emerson. Both families emigrated to New York. I don't have many clues except Thomas and Elizabeth were married in Mullaghfad (I think!) and we have a picture of Thomas with the inscription "on the way to Fivemiletown."

Do you know much about their emigration? Dates, the reason why they left, etc.? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at (e.g. Liverpool), this could be a good place to find more information. If you haven't already - You could try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64) for the family.. The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38): Microfilm copies of the books for all of Ireland are available at the National Archives of Ireland (NAI) http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/tithe-applotment-books-and-the-primary-griffith-valuation/ or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.

Mullaghfad is mostly forest these days and Im not aware of a church there! However, there is a very popular ghost house. The closest would be the Roman Catholic Chapel or the Church of Ireland at Cooneen, which is located on the road to Fivemiletown.
Do you know what religion they would have been when they emigrated?
Sorry !!! Ive been corrected on my assuption and been told there is a church at Mullaghfad !!! This is news to me, so I went on a mission to find it, via the wonders of modern technology. Here it is on Streetview - http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=cooneen&hl=en&ll=54.315322,-7.216301&sp…

It looks a lot like the place they came to in New York! They would have been Church of Ireland. I have a marriage record for Thomas Nevin at this church, and in his wife's obituary in NY, it mentions that Thomas still had family in Ireland and was considering going back to the homeland. He never did, though, so I don't know who his remaining family was.
Thank you for the link - I hope to see it for myself one day!
