Patrick Farmer and his wife Mary Jane Hassard both died in Ireland before 1 Nov 1930. They had 6 children that I am aware of who were all born in Enniskillen. Joseph died after 1 Nov 1930 in Ireland and possibly had a son Thomas; Frank who was born in Feb 1867 and immigrated to the US in 1887; Thomas born 16 Feb 1868 at Ely, Enniskillen and immigrated to the US in 1893; Mary who was born 12 Dec 1870 and died in Ely, Enniskillen, Ireland before 1 Nov 1930; Patrick Jr who was born 6 Jul 1872 in Ely, Enniskillen and possibly died in New York City after 1 Nov 1930; I don't know when he immigrated; and John born in 1880 and died in the US in 1910 - I don't know when he immigrated.

Mary (the mother) actual last name 'sounds' like what I am using as a possible surname. Also the location of Lesky Boho is referenced as possibly part of the address.

Any help in finding this family would be greatly appreciated as some of the descendants are coming to Ireland in May 2013.

Thank you so much!

Margaret

    Hi Margaret,

    Thank you for your message.

Lesky is actually a townland in the civil parish of Boho in Co. Fermangh. So the address would have read:

    Lesky,

    Boho,

    Co. Fermanagh.

A townland is the smallest official division of land in Ireland, so the fact that you have Lesky townland is great! If you would like more information on Irish land divisions follow this link; http://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/Irish-land-divisions.html

I have found a record of a Patrick Farmer living in a House Number 2 in Lesky in the 1901 census. Here is a link:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Fermanagh/Ross/Lesky/1363453/

There is also record of some Farmers in the 1911 census, here is the link:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Fermanagh/Ross/Lesky/515136/

Do you think this could be the family that you are looking for?

I am delighted to hear that you are visiting in May. We have recently added a new link to the top of our page for people that are visiting in 2013. It takes you to a short webform. We would really appreciate it if you could take a couple of minutes to fill it out. Thank you!

    Enjoy your stay.

    Kind regards,

  • Thank you so much for this detail about the address. This is the family we are looking for and I am VERY excited!!!

How can I find out their Birth, Baptism, Marriage and Death information? I know that the Catholic Church in America keeps very good records, so I hope it did in Ireland also.

Would their tombstones still be standing?  If so, how could I obtain photos of them?

The parents: Patrick and Mary Jane (Hassard) Farmer as well as the sons Joseph & James and daughter Mary all died in Ireland. Everyone else came to the US.  If it would help you I can send you a PDF of the family group sheet which shows all the details I have right now. We were not aware of a son James, so can only assume that he died in Ireland.

It is my cousin who will be coming to Ireland this summer. However, there may not be enough time for her to get to Lesky on this trip, so I am continuing the research.

Thank you so very much for all you help!! This is our first break through with all our Irish families and I cannot express the joy we are feeling over finding the Farmer family.

    Hi Margaret,

I am so delighted to have been able to help you with this breakthrough!!

In terms of finding birth, baptism, marriage and death records there are two places you can search: Civil Records and Church records.

    1.     Civil registration began in Ireland in 1864, so you should be able to find any records pertaining to the family back to this date. Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:

    http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

You can also search the indexes to these records online at:

    https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347

A website that gives good information on civil records and how to search/access them is http://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/Irish-civil-registration.html

    2.     Church records are the only records of births etc. in Ireland prior to 1864-unfortunately, record keeping in Ireland was not always very good. You should be able to find records of John and Catherine?s family in these records also, if they are available.

Most Catholic records are held locally so you may want to write to the parish priest directly for possible assistance. The civil parish of Boha is part of the Roman Catholic parish of Devonish. (again Irish land divisions can be very confusing!) One website which you may find useful in terms of Catholic records however, is the Irish Times. Here they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. For Devonish parish follow this link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Fermanagh&parish=Devonish&churchid=301

With regards as to whether or not their tombstone is still there I do not know. However, I found a Facebook page for Devonish and Boho parish church. Perhaps they may be able to tell you which graveyard you should be looking at and possibly more information. Here is the link to their page:

    https://www.facebook.com/devenishandbohoparish

Also, I will pass this message onto one of our volunteers in Fermanagh, hopefully he will be able to give you some information also on what graveyards you should be looking into.

    Best wishes,

    Emma

  • Hello Margaret

My daughter was doing a search on the computer and came across your message. Patrick and Mary Jane were my husband's great grandparents, Joseph was his grandfather. We live in Boho now and would be delighted to hear from you again and find out how you are connected to the Farmers. Thomas that you mentioned is my father in law.

    Regards

    Una

  • Una,

Thank you for contacting me. I am very interested in the Farmer and allied families and would love to know if you can help me with more information. I can tell you about someof the family who moved to the US and would love to know more about the family in Ireland. My email address is megsgeneo@gmail.com. If we use that, I can send you information easier. Do you know more about Patrick and Mary Jane? And do you know who their parents were?

I look forward to hearing from you.

    Margaret
