I am searching for John Armstrong who married Esther McDowell, I assume John died prior to 1863 because Esther is listed in the Griffiths Evaluation as a land owner and there is no mention of John.  Esther died prior to 1867, this is when her property  was recorded as belonging to their son, William.  Her death is not registered, and someone has listed her death date as 3 February 1864.  No documentation though.  John Armstrong's parents are Robert Armstrong and Nancy Scott (both border names).  My family were farmers and lived in Legananny, County Down.  There are still Armstrongs there today.  I've exhausted all my leads in Down, and am wondering when the Armstrongs arrived in Down.   I have a marriage record for John and Esther in 1796, but given their known children were born between 1818 and 1847, I can't help but wonder if this is another couple.  Is it feasible to bare children for 40 years?  Since there are only two Armstrong farms in 1863, Esthers' and Roberts' (first child), is it possible they were fairly new to Down?  Some believe all of the Irish Armstrongs descended from one man, who lived in Fermanagh, so I'm just wondering if anyone knows of any Armstrongs moving to Down. Earliest record I have is a christening  for a child in 1833, but according to the 1901 census, a child was born in Down in 1822.  Esther's landlord was Earl Annesley, so I'm also wondering if there's a way to access rent information.  Thanks for your help!

  • Good Afternoon

    I'm just wondering, that given the research and information you have gathered so far, have you considered how headstone information could take you back further?  Some headstone transcriptions are available here. It is very limited but might be another avenue to consider:

    http://historyfromheadstones.com/index.php?down

    There is a John and Jane Armstrong listed on the 1828 Tithes:

    The only other source I can think of in relation to the land/rent aspect of things are the Encumbered Estates Records. Unfortunately they are not available online as far as I know, unless findmypast or ancestry have them on their sites. The originals are retained in the National Archives, Dublin. A microfilm copy is available in PRONI: http://www.proni.gov.uk/introduction_-_irish_encumbered_estates_papers_…;

    Some further detail is available here:

    Remember to post any new information that you find here. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

    Best of luck with your search

  • information to lotsahunters;

    William Armstrong b. 1805 in Salry,(Solray), Fermanagh, Ireland. Bap. 22 Mar 1806 in Clones, Co. Monaghan, married in 1824 Ellenor Graham b. 22 Dec 1803 in Presbyterian,Boardmills, Co. Down. Her parents were; Samuel Graham & Margaret. I think they were married in Down. How long they stayed there before going to America, I don't know. She died in Mar 1840 in Ireland. They had several children. One, William born about 1823 died Dec 1880 in Ireland. William Sr. took the rest of his children to America. 1st Boston, then to Henderson co. Illinois. He died there in Mar 1890. I believe his father was a John, listed in the Tithes for 1829 Salry, Magheracross, Co. Fermanagh. If this rings true I know an Armstrong cousin who has an extensive Armstrong tree who is a descendant of Wm.

  • No, no headstones, and yes, I believe it's the correct John in the tithe allotment book.  I don't know who Jane is, but since it too is a family name, it may be a sister or sister-in-law. The information on the estate papers was no help, but I've heard that the Earl Annesley Papers hold some of the best records of the time period.  They're at Proni, so I can't access them.

    Thanks for your help.

  • What do you know of John? My John's William was born in 1822. He died in Legananny in 1909. I do have sources for this, including an autobiography written by his son Robert(who immigrated), the 1901 census, a death certificate, and a will. It isn't likely they're the same, because itappears to make them a generation off, given that you say William's son was born about the same time as John's son.  I know from the autobiography the John's father is Robert, so your John is not John's father either.

    Thanks for trying!
