I am trying to find the Parish and any information for my 3rd Great Grandfather James Graham who imigrated to Canada from  Fermanagh, Ulster.  James was born about  June 1805, but don't know when he left Ireland with his wife Angelina Armstrong DOB abt 1800., but do know it was sometime before 1830 as his first son was born in 1830 in Canada.

  • Hi,

Pretty sure we have been in touch before. Your major porblem is that James is one of the most common Graham first names in Fermanagh. There is a long history of Graham/Armstrong marriages which doesn't help. Without James' parents or a long list of siblings the chances of identifying find him are very slim. Angelina on the other hand is not the most common name. In the absence of other data your realistic chance of progressing is to find the marriage. This is a marriage which is not in my database so we can eliminate certain locations as possible places of marriage. C of I - Aghalurcher, Aghavea, Derryvullan North, Magheracross, Magheraculmoney, Templecarn, Galloon, Devenish, Rossorry, Drumkeeran, Lisnaskea, Kilskeery (Tyrone). There is the outside chance that it did happen in one of these but the entry was either illegible or mis-transcribed.

Definitely know that Boho and Enniskillen records did not survive for that period. I have some entries from Kinawley for this period but they are far from complete. That would leave Belleek, Inishmacsaint, Cleenish, Killesher, Clones, Derrybrusk (I think did not survive), likewise Derryvullan South all C of I. I believe it was about the 1830/40s that the Methodists began performing their own ceremonies. Of course if Angelina was from a neighbouring county then the marriage would have been there. Also the may have married just before the left - at the port of departure or even on board.

Rootsireland and the genealogy.ie site have no records for Angel/Angelina.

I would start in Canada. First son's name? That could well be James' father's name. Also any other Grahams or Armstongs living in the vicinity? People often followed in other relatives' footsteps. Anything in death records or wills that mention family members?
