I'm searching for information on Patrick Cassidy, born in Ireland in 1821. I don't know his parents' names or if he had siblings.

The Patrick Cassidy I'm looking for was in Clermont County, Ohio between the years of 1853-1857. I have found a record for his marriage to Martha Debruler in Clermont county on 8 Oct. 1853. Patrick and Martha had one child, named John Salt Cassidy, in 1854. Patrick died in Clermont county, Ohio on 6 Sep. 1857.

I believe this Patrick immigrated to the US in 1849. I have found a declaration of intent record for a Patrick Cassidy which was filed in Hamilton county Ohio, which is a county next to Clermont. The record states Patrick Cassidy, age 28, from Ireland, departed the port of Liverpool. He entered the port of New York on 1 May 1849. The declaration was dated 1 Mar 1853. There is no record of citizenship being granted for this Patrick.

I also found a ship manifest for the Constitution which included a Patt Cassidy, age 28, arrived in New York on 2 May 1849, with port of departure Liverpool. This Patt Cassidy was listed as a laborer, and he wasn't traveling with any other Cassidys.

John Salt Cassidy indicated on the 1930 census that his father was from Northern Ireland, and since Fermanagh is the ancestral home of the Cassidy surname I thought it might be logical to start a search there.

Finally, there may be some tie to the Salt family. Several Salts were witnesses to his will (which Patrick made as he was dying, I don't know of what) and his sons middle name was Salt.

I seem to have run out of sources in Clermont county, Ohio that would lead me back to Patrick's home in Ireland. If you have any advice for me I'd appreciate it. I know it's like looking for a needle in a haystack!

    Hi Pam,

    Thank you for your message.

Yes unfortunately it can be difficult to find information and records without having a specific place of origin. You have done so much work already though, so hopefully you can get passed this ?brick wall?.

Have you tried using https://familysearch.org/ ? This is a huge online database of genealogical records that has been compiled by the Church of the Latter Day Saints. As you have a rough idea of his date of birth perhaps you may be lucky and find his baptismal record.

Otherwise without any other family information it may be an idea to contact the Irish World Heritage Centre for assistance. However, a fee may apply. Here are their contact details:

  • Hi Pam, Just one more site you might find usefull - www.clairesancestry.com  This site focuses on Roslea Parish in Co Fermanagh where there are a large connection to the Cassidys. If you see reference to Clones parish do not be put of as the records often show this as both parishes are interspersed. Roslea is in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland and Clones ( CLO - NESS ) is in County Monaghan in Southern Ireland. Good Luck and if you need further assistance feel free to contact me. John Corr.
