Looking for any information on a residence stated for a relative Emma Martin who married George Dowdell in Ballinrobe on the 2 June 1855. Apparently she was resident on the 1 June 1855 at Cirrindangan and it states she was a schoolmasters daughter.  Does anybody know where this residence was or is it a place name in Ireland. Thanks for any response.

  • Soupy,

I'm not sure of a town land called Cirrindangan, but there is a town land called Carrigdangan in the Kilmichael Civil Parish in southwest Cork.

    Regards,

  • The marriage was in Mayo, and I believe this is the townland referred to:

Carrowndangan (Ceathrú an Daingin) is a townland in Ballinamore ED, in Killedan Civil Parish, in Barony, in Co. MayoIreland.

  • Soupy,

Per RootsIreland (paid subscription), Emma G. Martin, father- Edward J. (teacher) and George Dowdell, Constable, father- Robert (merchant) were married in 1855 in Ballinchalla Church of Ireland Parish, Mayo. George was from The Neale and Emma was from Carrindangan, Mayo, which might be the Carrowndangan name Patricia mentioned above.

  • There was an Edward J. Martin, teacher, living in Kilglass, Galway in 1853. He is on the 1857 Griffith Valuation leasing- land, house, and schoolhouse. I assume this might be Emma's father??

  • Thank you everyone for your replies this gives me more avenues to now explore. Mary it would appear very likely that Edward J Martin could be Emma's father but I can't prove it so far as  RootsIreland lists the following children below for an Edward, a schoolteacher and Eliza Martin of Kilglass in Ahascragh but no Emma is listed. I also believe Emma is the brother of my Great Great Grandfather Henry Needham Martin but again I can't prove that Edward J Martin living in Kilglass is the father. I have proven that Emma is Henry's sister as her son was mentioned in a newspaper article as the nephew of the late Henry Needham. The children listed for Edward J Martin and Eliza were:

    MartinEllen1843Co. Galway

    MartinJohn1846Co. Galway

    MartinElizabeth1839Co. Galway

    MartinJulia1849Co. Galway

MartinCaroline1853Co. Galway                                                                In an article by the Shepton Mallet Journal at Henry Needham Martin's funeral there is mention of a Rev John W Martin and in brackets brother which might suggest that the Edward Joseph Martin above was Emma and Henry's father but either there names were not recorded at birth or they were half brother and sister to the children of Edward Joseph Martin and Eliza. I also know that Henry Needham Martin was born about 1843 which was very close to Ellen Martin's recorded birth. Thanks once again everyone the search to prove that the schoolteacher at Kilglass is my Great Great Great Grandfather continues. Regards Philip
