Hello I am seeking information about my great great Grandfather Henry Needham Martin who was born in Ahascragh, Galway in 1843. I believe his father was Edward Joseph Martin also of Ahascragh but have no mother's name but guess she may have been a Needham. I understand that Henry joined the Royal Irish Constabulary in July 1860 but was discharged in the same month due to being deemed unfit by the surgeon. He joined the 5th (Royal Irish) Lancers in 1861 and spent 17 years with the regiment 10 in India reaching the rank of Sergeant Major but being pressed by his Colonel and other officers to take a commission before returning to Somerset where he died at the age of just 46. Any information to supplement the above would be most welcome as we do not know if there were any siblings or as I stated who his mother was or his fathers occupation. Thanks in advance for any responses.

Hi Patricia, Thanks for your response the name above for Henry was a suggestion in Ancestry UK but all my own father was told was that his Great Grandfather's Father's name was Edward Martin and that he had something to do with looking after pigs. In the Griffiths Valuation there appears to be only one Edward Martin which is the schoolteacher. When Henry applied to the Royal Irish Constabulary the following information was given:
25962 Henry N. Martin. Native of Galway. Protestant.
5 foot 8. Aged 18 on joining on 14 July 1860.
**Joining at a young age usually meant there was a relative, father, uncle or brother already serving**
Recommended by C. Filgate JP. Previously a labourer.
When he was enlisted for the 5th Irish Lancers his occupation was stated as a Clerk but unfortunately there is no mention of parents names on the army paperwork which I have attached for information.
Regards Philip
