Hello,

I am trying to locate the Kelly family that lived in Ardrahan North. My great grandmother was Ellen Kelly (born 1870-1872)daughter of John Kelly (born about 1844) and Honor Lyons Kelly (born about 1845). Honor and John were married in 1867. They owned a farm in this area from around maybe 1860's at least until the late 1960's when my aunt visited the remaining relative. Ellens' siblings were John, Martin, Delia and Honoria Kelly. I have located them in the 1901 census, but I can't tell where the house was located.

I don't have an exact birthdate for Ellen or Delia Kelly the 2 sisters that went to Philadelphia, Pa in 1890 and 1902. I would like to know how to find their birth records.

I would like to find out more information about the whole Kelly family, and would like to see if there are any relatives living in Ardrahan now. They were Roman Catholic and I would like to find out how to locate church records and where they are buried etc. Also and records to locate the family home if it is still there.

I would appreciate any help or information that anyone could provide. Thank you very much. Maureen

  • Rory,

Thank you so much for that information! My cousin Leo was visiting Ireland last week and managed to visit Ardrahan and went to St Teresa's Catholic church. They found a birth record for our great grandmother Honor Lyons Kelly from 1844.

He took pictures of Ardrahan for me. I have been the one researching the Kelly family on Ancestry and just recently came upon Honor Lyons and John Kelly on the records for Ellen Kelly's parents. My aunt who visited the remaining older woman in the original house in 1966 is now 78 and does not remember who the woman was, but  said the house had a thatched roof.

My cousin then drove to Ballindereen to visit St Colmans Church, this was where Ellen Kelly and a few of her siblings were born before they moved to Ardrahan. The priest was not there but Leo talked to him and he was going to check his records for Ellen's birth record. He was not able to visit any cemeteries to find our family since he had to travle to Galway City for his tour. He was very happy to have been in our ancestral villages. He is still touring Ireland and is having a great time.

I do appreciate any information that you can give me, I hope it won't be too much to ask of you. Our family name is now Watt, Ellen married my gr grandfather John Watt, and there are about 10 of us that never got to meet our great grandparents since they passed when we were babies. We never really thought to get this information from our parents and now they are all gone and so was the family history.  I was in Ireland years ago but only got to Shannon on the west coast, but I am hoping to get enough information on all my ancestors so I can visit Ireland in the next few years and go to all their villages and hopefully visit their graves. I am also doing research in Cork for other gr grandparents.

Thank you again for answering my letter. Would you rather I contact you by your e-mail instead? My e-mail is
