My great-grandfather, Thomas Tierney b. 1848, said that he was from Clonmore, Galway. His parents were Michael Tierney and Mary Connolly Tierney. I have found a Cloonmore (property/house + townland) on the Moore Institute, NUI Glaway website. The Griffiths Valuation (1855 printing) lists a Thomas Costello leasing property on this estate. Michael Tierney's sister, Catherine, was married to Thomas Costello. So, I have reason to believe that the Tierneys were living on this estate. Thomas had three siblings: John b. 1845, James b. 1852 and a sister. Would it be possiblible to find information for this family in R.C. parish records in this area? marriage records for Michael & Kate? baptismal records for the children? burial records for Michael's parents, Paul Tierney and Kate Connolly Tierney? I will be visiting in Galway, Aug 13 - 16. Would it be possible to visit the former Grant (Cloonmore) House property or research/copy church records? Are there any Tierney/Connolly relatives still living in the area? Thank you!

The church in Belclare is Sacred Heart. This is the link to the site. I have not been able to how far back their records go but possibly you can contact them and find out. The area is about 5 miles from Tuam.

I also looked at the 1901 census and there were two Costello families living in Cloonmore. Go to www.nationalarchives.ie to search their records.

Let me know if you have further questions. Enjoy your trip to Ireland.

  • Thank you, Roger. I've sent an email to Sacred Heart Church in Belclare, but I haven't had a response yet. We'll be in Dubln before Galway. Do you think I might find church records at the National Library? From their website it looks like they might have some R.C. church records dating back to the early/mid 1800's on microfilm. Do you know of any local historical societies that would include that area west of Tuam? I wonder if they might know something of the history of that area? I'm curious as to how long the Grant (Cloonmore)  Estate was in existence. Thanks in advance for your help!

Here is a link to " Ask a Librarian" at the National Library. They should be able to tell you about Belclare records. http://catalogue.nli.ie/Ask_a_Librarian/Home

I'm not familiar with Historical societies near Tuam.

I hope that you are still monitoring this and get this message :)

There are 3 Cloonmores in Galway :

    http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Galway/Claretuam/Cloonmore/

    http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Galway/Carrownagur/Cloonmore/

    http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Galway/Wormhole/Cloonmore/

The first two are either side of Tuam and the other is near Oughterard.

Coincidentally there is a tourist website for Oughterard run by a Brian Tierney http://www.oughterardtourism.com/mysitecaddy/site3/aboutwebsite.htm and there is more info on a Tiereny family here : http://www.oughterardheritage.org/page_id__88_path__0p3p.aspx

Not to be outdone Declan Tierney is from Tuam and a local journalist : http://www.connachttribune.ie/galway-news/itemlist/user/394-declantierney?start=4

I would suggest that because of the common name that they might be of some help

I am presently living in Liverpool but am returning to Galway August 13th to work in the area of Family Heritage If you want any help while in Galway on 14th or 16th ( I will be in Athenry for the festivalon teh 15th) please let me know

    My email is martinjcurley@gmail.com

Hope that you have a great visit

Thanks so much for your response! I have spent some time looking at the censuses, and I think I've found the Cloonmore that looks most promising. I hope to look at RC church records at the National Library when I'm in Dublin and maybe find Baptismal records that will put my ancestors in that particular place. I appreciate your offer of help, and I'll take your email address with me. I'm travelling with my three yound adult daughters, and we have a pretty full sightseeing itinerary. Thanks again!
