The 1830 Tithe listing for Clobern civil parish shows a Daniel Gilligan in Puleeghter (Polleighter is correct spelling).

The 1856 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Clonbern parish. shows a Daniel Gilligan in Polleighter townland. Likely the same Daniel as shown in 1830. There was also a Margaret and a Martin Gilligan in the same townland. Maybe the Daniel shown in 1830 and 1856 was the father of the 1816 Daniel.

Clonbern RC records do not start until 1855.

Thank you Roger. My great grandfather Daniel James Gilligan always listed his home in Ireland as Tuam, county Galway. and he was born Feb 1816 . He migrated to Wheeling West Virginia in 1850, was married to Alice Haley in 1854 and their first child was named Marry anna after Alices mother, their next child was named Patrick after Daniels father, the next child was named Margaret after  Daniels mother. Keeping the Irish naming pattern alive. The man that lives in Polladooey is related. His name is James Martin Gilligan, his father was named Edward his grandfather was Daniel and his great-grand-father was Edmond(Edward). This Edward I believe was my great grandfather's brother. Daniel James worked for the railroads in the USA, joined the union army in 1865 and moved to Iowa living to be 100 yrs and 10 months old.The Daniel who lived in Clonbern could not be the same one who shows up in the 1856 Griffiths. Their are no family members in my linneage named Martin. I hope you can make sense out of what I have typed, and again THANK YOU. Any further information will be appreciated. Just one point, Irish immigrants tended to say they were from the nearest "big" town near where they lived rather  than their actual townland. Clonbern parish is just to the northeast of Tuam parish. Someone from Polleigher, Clonbern parish would likely say they were from Tuam.

Thank you Roger. I had surmised that what you said about the nearest big town of Tuam was so. I cannot seem to get any more info on Daniel, can you suggest where one would go from here? Also is the townland spelled Polleigher or is it Polleighter? I welcome all corrections and any sage advice you can give me. I know Daniel was a devout Catholic, but because of the civil war and the burning of many records it has made it harder to for me to unravel my mystery. Again thank you for answering my inquiries.

Shot in the dark but you could look thru the Tuam parish register in case he was baptized there

You may also want to consider autosomal DNA testing. Possibly you will match someone who has more info on the Gilligans.

My great, great grandfather was also Daniel James Gilligan. His daughter, Margaret, married Martin Cosgriff. One of their sons, Edward Leo Cosgriff, had a son, Paul Cosgriff, who is my dad. Much of the information I have on Daniel Gilligan I found in newspapers and Family Search website.
