Martin Naughton and Bridget Fallon

Without information on the names of their parents it will be difficult to identify what their family circumstances were.

In the the parish record, Martin's surname appears to be spelled "Nocton". This was common in some areas and was often changed

to Naghten and Naughton later.

I attach some detail on the Famine in the 1840's.

The subscription site Roots Ireland has a January 20 1838 baptismal record for a Martin Naughton with father Matthew Naughton and mother Maria Kelly. The RC parish was Glinsk. Very possibly this is the baptismal record for your Martin. The family lived in Kilbegnet and Dunamon.

For Bridget Fallon, there were three possible records in Glinsk.

December 12 1837 father Bartholomew Fallon mother Ann Timothy

July 30 1842 father Edward Fallon mother Maria Fallon

September 15 1845 father Patrick Fallon mother Margaret Connelly   

All three recordsshowed Kilbegnet and Dunamon

The Great Hunger (An Gorta Mor) was roughly from 1846-1849 but even after this period times were very difficult and likely Martin had no prospects of leasing land and he and Bridget left Ireland for better opportunities in America.

A search of 1870 and 1880 U.S. federal census records shows Martin's oldest son to be named MATTHEW, so that is likely the name of Martin's father.

Roger, yes, according to Bridget's death certificate, her father was Edward Fallon so it matches with "July 30 1842 father Edward Fallon mother Maria Fallon"! Is there a way that I can see that original document? And thank you for your insight as to why they left Ireland.

What I know from death certificates in the US, Martin's father and mother was Mathew Naughton and Mary Kelly and Bridget's father and mother was Edward Fallon and Mary Fallon (which I later was told might be Mary Roche, but this is unconfirmed). Thanks for the link to the Great Famine!

Patricia: Yes, you are correct, according to Martin's death certificate, his father was Mattew.

Thank you so much for this info!! Do you know of any way that I can learn more about the Glinsk area and where they may have lived? And especially is there any way to find info on one generation going back, meaning Edward and Mary?

The 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing shows a Mattew (sp) Naughton in Derryhippoo townland in Kilbegnet civil parish. Possibly this is your ancestor.

I did not see a good lead for Edward Fallon in Kilbegnet parish. Possibly the Fallons were from a nearby parish.

Baptismal records for Kilbegnet parish start in 1836 so finding records one generation back would be very difficult.

One more thing if you don't mind. My great great grandfather, Martin Naughton's obituary says he was born in Creggs in County Galway. Why would his baptismal record be in the Glinsk or Kilbegnet records, which when I look on a map, appears to be in Roscommon.

The RC parish covers areas in both Galway and Roscommon.  Below is a link to the present day parish of Kilbegnet (Glinsk and Creggs). In the 19th century there were likely chapels in all three locations.
