I believe that my ancestors, the Mullen / Mullin / Mullins family lived in and came from Corracullin, County Galsway.

I would be most interested in any / all information anyone might have about them

The 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Kilkerrin civil parish has a number of Mullen/Mullin records but none in Corracullin.  https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/galway/kilkerrin.htm

The RC parish records for Clonbern/Kilkerrin do not start until 1892.

The 1901 census for Corracullen townland has one Mullen family.

  • Hi Roger.

Thank you for responding to my post.

    I didn't see any Mullen/Mullin/Mullins listed in the Griffith Valuation records in Corracullin in the link you provided but I did find them here;

    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNam…

I also have found them listed in Corracullin in some remnant records I have come across from the 1841 & 1852 census.

On a seperate note I have found them in Griffith Valuation in the Islands Townland in Killian Parish next door to Kilkerrin.

Do you know anything about the Islands townland; it's small about 1 square mile in area and is owned by one man; John Cheevers, and he has (43) tenants one of which is Laurence Mullin. The islands townland appears per the historical map to be either all woods or all bog. I am curious how/why all these people are listed on the Island?

    Thanks,

  • Hi Art:

I just saw your post.  Did you ever get a reply from the family that I had contacted you about?  If not, let me know and I'll follow up.

    Have a Happy Easter.

    All the best,

I'm not familiar with Islands but I notice from this listing  https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/galway/killian.htm  that everyone listed in Islands is also listed in another townland such as Tonacurra. If it was a bog then maybe all the tenants had a small holding in the bog in Islands.

FYI. There is an East Galway Genealogy and DNA Facebook group   https://www.facebook.com/groups/eastgalwaygenealogy with a couple thousand members. The group was founded by one of our IRO volunteers.

  • Hi Roger

Another friend told me about Tonacurra and sure enough Laurence Mullen and John Gavin appear in the Griffith Valuation Tonacurra records as well as in the Islands records. I looked at the historical maps for both townlands and it appears that most of the Mullen/Gavin properties were located in Tonacurra with just a little overflow in Islands - and the overflow into Islands appears from the map I saw to be farmland and not the woods/bog that covers the majority of the Islands area. In summary, I believe that Laurence Mullen, per the 1841/1851 census came from Corracullin but by 1854 (when Laurence's son, my great-grandfather, Thomas Mullen born February, 16, 1854 came along) they had moved (with his step-son; John Gavin) to farm in Tonacurra/Islands with (his brother; John Mullen and) another relative; Edmund Mullen. The Tonacurra/Islands Griffith Valuation records that I viewed included a date of 1855. This 1855 date is important to me because other information I have found on Laurence (Larry) Mullen and John Gavin indicates that they emigrated to the USA ca 1857. I believe all this shows me that Laurence Mullen was born in Corracullin and moved to Tonacurra and then emigrated to the USA. Unfornately it does not tell me where my great-grandfather, Thomas Mullen was born on February 16, 1854? Now I am thinking that Laurence Mullen may have married my great-grandmother; Mary Mullery Gavin, when they lived in Tonacurra and that Thomas may have been born in Tonacurra and maybe I will be able to find church records for these things - but first I need to know what catholic church serves Killian Parish and Tonacurra? Do you know? Can you add anything else?

    Hi Jane

I can't thank you enough for matching me up back in 2018 with Jimmy & Theresa Kilmartin who live in Corracullin. I apologize and am embrassed if I haven't thanked you in the past. I learned from the Kilmartins that they live in a renovated/restored "Mullen" house in Corracullin. At present I continue to correspond with them as I am tryimg to determine if they live in the "Larry Mullen" house or if "Larry Mullen" lived in the house next door where Jimmy's brother currently lives. That was a gtreat connection for me so "Thank You" so very much!

The RC parish should be Killian/Killeroran. Here is the link to the NLI parish register https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0545   There appears to be a gap in records and for some reason the parish is not included on theRoots Ireland data base.

Do you have access to FindMyPast.ie or the Ancestry World subscription?

  • Hi Roger.

Thanks for getting back to me.

And thanks for the RC Parish information.

    Great tips - much appreciated.

I am going to check the NLI site to see if it can help me.

I don't have my own subscription to Ancestry.com but I do have access to a library-version at my public library.

I don't think I have heard of FindMyPast - I will try to google it to learn more about it.

    Happy Easter

  • Hi Roger.

I am posting this to provide an update on my work looking at the Killian Parish baptism & marriage records on the NLI site you told me about.

My great-grandfather; Thomas Mullen was born on February 16, 1854 so I looked at the baptism records first and wouldn't you know, the baptism records from end-of-January through May 13, 1854 are illegible! All other pages are readable but not this one!

I checked the marriages starting January, 1850 and ending in 1854 but couldn't find a marriage between Laurence/Larry Mullen and Mary Mullery Gavin.

So I didn't find what I was hoping for but thank you for giving me the information to get to those RC Church records.

    All the best,

    -Art Mullen

FindMyPast is another subscription site but since the register is illegible, you won't find the record there. Likely the library version of Ancestry would not have access to Irish records.

  •  Hi Art,

I’ve recently seen your messages from 2021.

I have been looking into the Mullins/Mullens of Corracullin for reasons other than genealogy, and I think I can help you with the theory that they somehow moved into Tonacurra.

If you can respond to this message, am happy to share!

    Slán,

    Ruth
