Hello,

I'm not sure I have the right parish here. is Cappagh the same as Cappamore? In any case, I am looking for someone named Richard Ruth, who emigrated late 1890s, approximately, to New York. He may have been married at the time. He had a sister named Johanna, who preceded him to the US. We would dearly love to ascertain where our grandfather came from and any possible information about his family of origin. Thank you so much. We are coming to Ireland in July.

  • Betty,

If you go to the website www.askaboutireland.ie and then click on griffith valuation.

Then go along the blue menu and click on " names book search "

in the "placename" box put in the word cappa

this will bring in all the villages and townslands with the name cappa or cappagh or cappamore etc,./

if you go onto www.rootsireland.ie you will find just a few richard ruths. its an unusual name.   I was guessing his birth around 1860 + or - 10 years.

    I found 3

    1858 in Co. Cavan

    1865 in co kilkenny

    1855 in co. kildare

Hope one of these is your ancestor.

    regards,

    Anne

  • Thank you both!

I definitely need more expertise than I have. My grandfather reported he was from Limerick.  Moreover, he had a sister Joanna and his middle name was Cornelius. . He died around 1953 so we have to assume he was born in the 1870s or later. My father was born in 1909 in Brooklyn, so he was definitely there by then, although we don't have an exact date of arrival. I can't seem to get the NY death certificate, though if I ever do pry it out of the city, that may shed light on him.

What I've found via RootsIreland is: One family with a Richard Corneilius Ruth and a Joanna Ruth, both born in Waterford. (1883 and 1881). There is another  Richard Ruth, no sister named Joanna, born in 1886. This would have made him 18 when my father was born...thus this does not seem right on either the age or the sister angle. Plus, I think I've tracked that "Limerick Richard's" death. (Two died, one in 1876 and one in 1882.)

Anyway, the Cappamore connection came about because someone found a Richard Ruth on a ship manifest and suggested that might be he. I have no idea. The above is all I truly "know."

Thank you so much for any help you can give me.
