Hi- I am wondering if someone would be able to help me gain access to the locked Carmelite Abbey ruins at Loughrea.
I will be in Galway in May and would like to visit the graves of Dr. Martin Daly Nowlan, his wife Maria and Mrs. O'Kelly (Creron), Maria's mother which are in the locked ruins. The Nowlan family lived in Gort. I have tried many times through the Carmelite website for permission but have not received any reply. I located these graves after a 30 year search.
Thank you. Regards, Margaret McKeown, Western Australia

Dear Margaret,
There should not be a problem arranging access to the Carmelite ruins in Loughrea.

Hello Margaret!
Very glad to hear you are going to Loughrea in May. If you have a chance, give Father Bernard a nice hug! He's been the caretaker of the graveyard for many, many years, and it was through his kind generosity that allowed us to photograph the Internment Register.

Hi Margaret,
I have become a straw-clutcher of note with our Irish relative!! I see you refer to a Dr Martin Daly Nowlan. Our man in Ireland was Martin Daly, also from Gort - and I wondered whether you knew how Martin Daly Nolan came by his name. As I said............clutching!!

P.S Do hope your visit to Gort
was fruitful!

Hi Flick,
I just saw your post of February 2019, better late than never. My Martin Daly Nolan is not related to your Martin Nolan of Gort. Martin Daly Nolan (born c1806) was the son of Andrew Nowlan and Eliza Daly who lived in Prospect, near Gort. Andrew Nowlan was originally from Loughrea and the family tomb is in the ruins of the Carmelite Abbey, Loughrea. Martin was given the name Daly after his mother’s family who were from Dalysgrove, Galway. Martin Daly’s maternal grandfather was Dermot Daly. Martin Daly Nolan’s Uncle, Peter Daly lived at Castledaly near Gort.
