My 3X great grandparents were Stephen Madden and Honoria Usher.   Stephen was born about 1795.  His father was John Madden from Longford.  Stephen is mentioned in Slater's Directory of 1846 as 'commissioner for taking affidavits and master extra in chancery, Main St Loughrea.  Stephen and Honoria had nine children Agnes, Martin, John, Stephen, Fergus, Honora, James, Mary Matilda and Sarah Adisa... all born in Loughrea between 1805-1820.  Stephen Jnr and James (my great great grandfather) migrated to Australia in 1841.

I would like to find information on my family from Loughrea and also the Usher family from Eastwell near Loughrea from whom Honoria Usher is descended.  Honoria's parents were John Usher and Honoria McNamara.   Honoria McNamara's parents were John McNamara and Joan Nugent.  I have names but  very few dates.

Any help at all would be appreciated.  There may still be members of this branch of the Madden family living in Loughrea ?

  • Interested to receive your query. Are you aware that the most relevant "Longford" is not County Lonford in Ireland but a townland in the parish of Tiernascragh which is the ancestral home of the O'Madden Clan?  There are several local books on the O'Madden Family - one by a local expert called Ger Madden - who is planning another O'Madden Clan reunion, and also a work on the parish of Tiernascragh by Father Raymond Hogan. All O'Madden's trace their lineage to  Ui Maine, a chieften who ruled East Galway around 700AD.

I am sure we can get some info on your people.  Very unusually, the census for Loughrea for 1828 is in existance. I have yet to get my hands on it - but there are a lot of people very interested in the O'Madden history - so please keep in touch.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage in Australia.  There are more than one or two of you down there!

    Best..

  • Hi there,

the Madden name is very common in South East Galway. A good place to look for Madden related information is at www.maddenfamilyhistory.com  That site lists books and details that may help you further with your researches. Keep in touch and let us know how you got on.

  • Thank  you Mike and Christy.  I have looked at the Madden family history site before.  Most of the information there relates to my family in Australia eg.. the arrival of James and Stephen Jnr in 1841 on board the ship 'Maria'.   There is nothing that I can see re the Maddens from Longford or Loughrea.

I have heard about the book you refer to Mike and I will try to purchase it.  The 1828 Census would be interesting because Stephen Madden would have been in Loughrea at the time.  His daughter Agnes (born about 1805) married a local solicitor Thomas Walsh in 1834. Thomas Walsh (Wallsh) was the son of  Dominick and Frances (Kelly) Walsh.

Thank you for the information about Longford being a Townland.  That definitely narrows the search.   I have some names but not many dates but  it seems from my information that Daniel Madden of Longford married Morne Ne Moy O'Kelly.  Then there were a few generations of Johns.  Then in ? 1790's  John Madden of Longford had children Stephen (my 3X great grandfather)  Kathleen, Mary and John.   John's son James was b. 8 Feb 1831, d. 24 Dec 1901, bur. Tynagh,  Monsignor in Holy Orders, parish priest of Tullagh and vicar?general of Clonfert, Co. Galway.

I'm not sure if this means anything but someone may have some more details.

    Regards

    Maz

  • Hi Maz,

you need to get your hands on a copy of Fr Declan Kelly's Meadow of the Miracles; A History of the Diocese of Clonfert  (2006) p.69. Declan has a section entitled 'Madden Generosity' that speaks specificially about Mons. James Madden's financial endowment for the creation of a Catholic Seminary in the Diocese of Clonfert. Delcan includes a photograph of James' nephew Fr John Madden. He also mentions two bachelor brothers of James', John Joe and Stephen living together on a farm of  213 acres in Carrowreagh in the parish of Mullagh - Killoran. It was their legacy that appears to have provided the financial means for Mons. James' endowment. I hope this is of use to you in your research. The townland should provide further avenues to follow.

  • Mons. James Madden Tynagh

Mons James madden is buried as you state in Tynagh graveyard. His memorial which consists of what was once a very fine Celtic cross is now sadly lying in a sorrowful collapsed state. The inscription is in Latin as might be expected for a notable Catholic clergyman. It reads:

    HIC CRUSIS SUB UNBRA

    LOCUM RESURRECTIONIS SIBI ELECIT

REVMUS JACOBUS MADDEN PAROCHUS DE TYNAGH

    VICARUS GENERALIS CLONFERTENSIS

SS. DD. LEONIS XIII PR?LATUS DOMESTICUS

VIR PIE TATE INSIGNUS ORATIONI DEDITUS OMNIBUS CARUS

    CUJUS ANIMAE PROPITIETUR DEUS

NATUS DIE FEB. VIII ANNO MDCCCXXX1

MORTUS DIE DEC. XXVII ANNO MDCCCCI

    R.I.P.

It confirms that he was born in 1831 and died in December 1901 and that he was the Vicar General of the Diocese of Clonfert.

  • I know this isn't very helpful but I posted a message about the Dignan/Lynch family of Loughrea. I have a few of the family baptismal transcriptions and noticed that one of the sponsors names on the record is John Madden. He was the sponsor for James Dignan born in 1816, (spelled Deignan in the transcription), Roman Catholic. His father was Peter Dignan and his mother was Margaret (Lynch) Dignan. "Mrs. Madden" is the sponsor of another child.  I noticed that your Honora's great grandmother was Mary Lynch. Our family legend says that Margaret Lynch was a descendent of Charles Lynch (born in 1705 in Galway) a famous judge who ended up in Virginia. Another coincidence is that my ggggrandfather Patrick (son of Peter) and his brother Peter immigrated to Australia in 1839. Peter stayed in Australia while Patrick went to Auckland in 1841 and lived their the rest of his life.

  • Thank  you Alison.   There are lots of John Maddens in my family so it is possible that there is a connection.   Also with the Lynch family.   I will keep it all in mind as I am researching.

  • Hi Maz,

I have recently discovered a portrait of Mons. James Madden in one of Declan Kelly's books entiteld Ballinasloe: From Garbally Park to the Fairgreen. Nonsuch Publishing, Dublin, (2007), p.32. It also contains a photograph of a relation of his Dr George Madden (died 1961). On page 62 can be found a photograph of Mrs Madden sister-in-law of Mons. James Madden and mother of Fr John Madden. A photograph of her daughter (sister of Fr John) named Polly (Mary Anne) Madden is also shown.  It may be worth your while picking up this book as a useful source. I can put you in contact with Declan if you wish. He may shed some further light on the clerical side of the Madden family.

  • Hi Christy,

Thanks for the name of this book.  I have ordered it and will check it out and get back to you.  From my information which my father's cousin put together after going through parish records in Ireland in the 1980's.. Mons James Madden was my GGG grandfather's nephew.  I have no information on the other Maddens you mentioned.  Each little bit of information though helps fill in the pieces of the puzzle.

Do you have any suggestions as to where I might get some information (articles or books) about what was happening in Loughrea in the first half of the 19th century ?  My ancestor James Madden left Loughrea with his brother Stephen in 1841 which was before the worst years of the famine.  Both young men were well educated and lived in the town so were not directly affected by what was happening in the countryside.   They are both mentioned on the 1841 Census fragments of Galway and their father Stephen in Slater's Directory of 1846.  I can find no record of the family in Ireland after this date though.

    Regards

    Maz

  • Hi Maz, I would recommend a relatively recent book of individual papers published by Loughrea History Project - Forde, J. et. al (eds) 2003 The District of Loughrea Vol: I History 1791-1918. Loughrea History Project. JayCee Printers, Galway. This book carries a wide range of papers relating to Loughrea and hinterland and is one of two books published by Loughrea History Project. The second book deals with the folklore of the place. Forde, J. et. al (eds) 2003 The District of Loughrea Vol: II Folklore 1860- 1960. Loughrea History Project. JayCee Printers, Galway. I am not very certain about the availability of these books at present. They may be all sold out but it is worth while contacting Christian Cassidy project co-ordinator at Loughrea History Project. Her contact details are as follows. Loughrea History Project Project Co-ordinator: Christina Cassidy Tel: (091) 847155 E-mail: loughreahistory@eircom.net Location: Loughrea History Project, Temperance Hall, Barrack Street, Loughrea.

Where did you get the information and how long do you have it indicating  Joan Nugent married John McNamara

and she was the daughter of Edmond Nugent and Mary Lynch . I think the Edmond Nugent in question was the eldest son

of Michael Nugent of  Carlanstown ( Baron Delvin ) . I also think Joan Nugent was born out of wedlock (Not that matters to me ) and that Edmond died serving the Emperor of Austria at a battle in a place called Buda . He was only 22 poor fellow .

His brother the famous Robert  ( later Earl Nugent Vicount Clare ) inherited his fathers title and indeed many others .

Robert appears to have been very close to his elder brother and he called his only son by his first wife Emilia Plunkett "

Edmond "   . There were only 2 Edmonds around this time as aforesaid but on timing I think only Roberts brother

could possibly have fathered a child by Mary Lynch . I have a lot of supporting documents to advance this view which I will share with you later but if your info is from a different source to mine it strengthens the contention .

By the way where are you now ?

Kind regards to a new found cousin
