I am looking for any information on the Dignan from Loughrea. Peter Dignan and Margaret Lynch reportedly came from Loughrea. The children that I am aware of are Patrick (born aprx 1813) who immigrated to New Zealand and married Mary Derrom, Peter who moved to Sydney, Australia (he went there with his brother Patrick but Patrick went on the NZ in 1839), Mary who married Thomas Hobbs, Bridget who married ? Scanlon (they moved to the US) and Margaret. I don't have any birth information for these children. One of my aunts thought there were 8 children all togther.
I have been able to find Patrick's baptismal record (he is my descendent) but nothing else about the family. I do know that Annie Hobbs, daughter of Mary Dignan and Thomas Hobbs lived with Patrick and Mary and died in NZ.

Hi Alison,
There is a census for the town of Loughrea in the 1820's - which I have yet to see - but possibly has details that would be useful to you. Leave it with us and we'll see what we can find out.
In the meantime, please spread the word about Ireland XO! If you are pretty sure of the Loughre link, please get all your relatives with that Loughrea link to also sign up.
Many thanks,
Mike Feerick

Thanks Mike. I will be interested to hear if you find anything. I am 100% sure of their Loughrea link as several baptismal transcriptions say the parish is Loughrea.

I found a record in the National Archives for Peter Dignan, Loughrea:
PETER DIGNAN.
Born LOUGHREA, Galway.
Served in Galway Militia.
Discharged aged 22.
Covering date gives year of discharge
Kilmainham Reference: A4467
See film image 180I believe this is the father of Patrick Dignan who immigrated to New Zealand that I posted about earlier this year. I contacted the archives and interestingly they don't think that this is an item that they own, nor could they tell me where I might find it. Does anyone either know about the Galway Militia and where I might be able to find this item or have some general knowledge of this branch of the military. Thanks for considering my question.
