Hello,
Could someone tell me where Rathready/Rathruddy (I'm unsure of the proper spelling) is on the map?
My gg grandmother, Bridget Sweeney, lived on the corner of Athenry Rd and Galway Rd until she died in 1922. The house was torn down sometime in the late 1950's or early 1960's so that the terribly sharp corner of those 2 roads (where it intersects with Mount Carmel Crescent) could be widened for car traffic. Her home was once where the auto repair shop is now located, across the street from the piper statue that I use for my own photo on IRO.
When she died, the Father that reported her burial in the Abbey wrote she was from "Rathruddy". I've always wanted to know just where that is in the area.
Also, while helping someone else on this site the other day, I saw the words "Tulla Hill". I've seen that in the Abbey internment register also. (The priests always tried to write in the last known place of residence and/or the place the person was from.)
Could you also explain where that is on the map?
Thank you,
Mary Van Dyke

Hi Mary,
Thank you for your message.
Raruddy refers to townlands to the west of Loughrea town-Raruddy East and Raruddy West. They both belong to the civil parish of Kilconicky.
I think that Rathready is the more modern variation of Raruddy.
For some more information follow this link to Galway Public library?s place names of Galway database.

To see where Rathready is on the map in relation to Mount Carmel Crescent follow this link:
Tullahill is an area to the west of Loughrea town; however it is out the Old Galway Road as opposed to the Athenry Road. Follow this link to see where it is on the map:
I hope that this helps to clarify things for you!
