Hello,  I am looking for information on Catherine (Kate) Doran.  I think she was born around 1809 in County Galway.  She married Thomas Fury sometime around 1843.  If anyone has any information on Catherine or Thomas I would love to hear from you.

  • Hi Mary,

I couldn't find a birth/baptism record of Catherine Doran born Galway. There are 4 Catherine Dorans born in other counties around 1809 1808 Limerick 1809 Wicklow 1810 Armagh and 1810 Laois.

I did find 2 Thomas Fury born in Galway 1 in 1817 and 1 in 1819.

I couldn't find their marriage anywhere.

There is no public member tree on ancestry which has Catherine & Thomas.

Would it be possible that Catherine was born in a county other than Galway and / or not in 1809 (more like 1819 like Thomas)?

Can you tell me if they came to USA 7 where they settled.

  • Hello Col,

I am sorry it has taken me so long to find your reply to my post and answer you.  All of the information I have about Catherine Doran I took from U.S. Census reports and the cemetery where she is buried.  I have noticed a lot of inconsistencies about Catherine and her family.  I think they did not know how old they were and when they were born.  Someone found a death record for a Thomas Fury (Catherine married Thomas Fury) in Abbeyknockmoy, Galway in 1848.  We think this may have been Catherine's husband.  The reason I think Catherine and Thomas were from Galway is because Glaway, Ireland was given as the place of birth on the death certificate for her dauther, Sarah.  Using the year 1909 as Catherine's birth year and the birth year given for her daughter, Sarah, 1834, Catherine would have been 25 when Sarah was born.  I have another birth year for Sarah also.  So you can see, I really don't know when any of them were born as different years were given to different people at different times.  There was a son born to Catherine (Doran) and Thomas Fury and I have his birth year as 1844, a full 10 years after Sarah's brith.  That would have made the son (Michael) 4 years old when his father dieed.  I'm sure there must have been other children but I haven't found them.  One census report said Catherine was the mother of 6 children but I only have 2.  I don't know when they came to the U.S. and even if they all came together.  I don't think Thomas Fury left Ireland, I think he died there.  I think the other children born to Catherine and Thomas also died in Ireland but I don't have any names nor birth dates.

  • Hi Robyn,  thanks for trying but I am sure Catherine Doran married Thomas Fury.  I am not certain about the birth year nor the county.  I believe the country (Galway) is correct but I can't be certain.  There is no one left for me to ask and all of the information the family provided to census takers etc varies.  I'm not sure they knew themselves, at least I don't think they knew when they were born.

  • Hi Mary

The only Fury - Todd marriage record on www.rootsireland.ie/ is that of John Doran and Bridget Fury (in any county & any year) 16 June 1842 Tuam Galway R C parish.

  • Thanks, Col.  I just don't know where to look.  Galway may have been the last place they lived and they may not have been from there at all.  I do remember my mother telling me someone in Ireland (perhaps her grandfather, who would have been Thomas Fury) was a Tinker, or Traveller.  They may have traveled all over Ireland and just said Galway was where they were from.  It is possible Sarah and Michael, the 2 children I found, were born in Galway but I can't really be certain of that with all of the other "iffy" information.  My great-grandfather, John Doyle, married Sarah Fury sometime around 1864 in New York, USA.  John Doyle was born in 1840 in County Cork and I have a birth year for Sarah Fury as 1834!!  Her death certificate says she was 64 when she died in 1909.  That would have made her year of birth 1845, which would have made her more of her husband's age.  The death certificate says she was born in Galway as were the other family members (parents). The information was provided by her daughter so of course it is questionable.

There are 6 John Doyle baptisms from Cork in 1840 - do you have a parish?

  • Hi Col,  thank you so much.  Perhaps the Sarah and Michael you found are my family, I don't know.  The original birth date I had for Sarah was Dec 1834.  Her husband, John Doyle, was born 11 Jan 1840.  That would have made her 6 years older than her husband.  The record you found would make her 10 years older than her husband.  The date of birth I have for Michael is 26 Apr 1844, that would be 14 years between Sarah and Michael.  The record you found would make it 10 years between them.  The maiden name for Catherine is different but is it possible she was married before she married Thomas Fury???  As for John Doyle I don't have a parish for him.  I sent for his death certificate and the information for his father's and mother's names just didn't sound right to me.  His father's name was listed as John Doyle, that's very possible but his mother's name was listed as Sarah Doyle.  The information was given by his granddaughter and I think she may have misunderstood the question and provided the names of her grandparents!!  I guess the only clue for my John Doyle would be the month of January.  The birth date I have for him is 11 Jan 1840.  For some reason his age and birth date didn't waver as did the information for the Fury family.
