My great grandmother Ellen Crowe was born in Galway between about 1838 and 1843. On her death certificate her parents are listed as Anthony Crowe and Ellen Crowe (nee Small) but I wonder if her mother’s family name is incorrect (perhaps Glynn?). On the ship’s log to NZ in 1861 she is listed as Helen Crowe, Drumgriffin.

An IRO volunteer Paul 2nd Oct 2022 very kindly gave me a tip that her father may have been Martin Crowe. I have established from Roots.Ireland that Martin Crowe was baptised 19-Oct-1838 St Nicholas Combined Galway (parents: Anthony Crow and Nelly Glynn).  Also, Martin had a brother Patrick Crow baptised 06-Mar-1836 Ballybane, Castlegar, Galway (parents Anthony Crow and Helen Glynn).

I was unable to find on Roots.Ireland any record in Galway of a baptism for Ellen Crow(e) or any other siblings of Martin and Patrick. Is it possible to find a baptism  (birth) certificate for Ellen. Did I not search in the right place? I have 8 DNA matches with descendants of Martin and Patrick so suspect Ellen may be their sister. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • John,

The townland of Drumgriffin is in the Civil parish of Annaghdown where there are a number of families who are recorded as Crow and Croe, also Small.

Please see Annaghdown Heritage Society and Roots Ireland baptisms. Helen/Ellen not found.

Attached is a record of an Anthony Crow who was baptised in Castlegar in 1839. This indicates that the name "Anthony" is in the general area, possibly a grandfather. His address Ballindooly. Tithe record 1824 - James Crow - Parish of Annaghdown

  • Thanks to your researcher McCoy for trying to find references to my ggm Ellen Crowe.  Despite McCoy's best efforts when my ggm was born remains an unresolved mystery but thanks for your research efforts.

  • Hello,

Anthony is a rare name amongst Crowe surnames as well as Crow the variants Croagh, Crough and Croak. The last being also variable due to phonetics and a lack of standard names until after 1864.

Most Anthony Crowes are found in Tipperary (their homeland is Clare but Tipp is where they doubled their numbers in the 1800s. Beware of records saying origins are xxxxxx. Many people have been found to say which port they sailed from and not the homeland / townland which will be some small very local place with a difficult name to spell? :)

I have a one name study for Crowe and a list of 4000 baptisms but that does not mean everyone was covered by them. So many people were never listed, even some children within a family until they arrived in the USA or Oceania because there was greater officialdom there.

The nearest I have is an Ellen born in 1864 to Martin Crowe & Judith Walsh - out of your time frame but I will put it here

I have a list of about 8 Anthony's baptisms too which I can send if you want to work with them?

The hyperlinks are for the NLI registers. In a worst case scenario you can scroll through the images looking for associated people that were sponsors or witnesses as they would all be 'family' of some sort - usually brothers and sisters.

Anything interesting could be people also be on immigration records or already in the immigration country?

Crow Patrick - 1836 06 Mar 1836 Ballybane? Castlegar Galway Anthy Crow Nelly Glyn http://registers.nli.ie//registers/vtls000634150#page/1/mode/1up Thomas Kirwan Sabina Crowe

If any more records I have you can find my email at crowegenealogy.net and also links to a Crowe facebook page run by Philip Crowe where you can post questions like this?

  • Thanks for your message Shay. In fact I obtained these records from Roots.Ireland. Martin married Julia Judy Walsh (10 Mar 1862 Lackagh) and as you have posted had Ellen, Catherine, Anthony and John but also Julia 1879 and Margaret 1883. Martin's brother Patrick emigrated to NZ and had 9 children. It is my belief that my ggm Ellen Crow born circa 1838-1843 (conflicting info on various certs) was a sister of Martin & Patrick based on the fact I have at least 8 DNA matches (some 2-3 cousins) with various descendants of these brothers. I have not been able to ever find a birth cert for Ellen who came from Annaghdown (Drumgriffin). However her death cert lists her parents as Anthony Crowe and Ellen Small but this may not have been filled out accurately. I would love to know.
