Searching for Henry Edward Haverty and relatives....

According to his birth certificate, my grandfather was born 26/4/1987 at 64 York Street, Kingstown (now known as Dun Laoghaire). There is a York Road in Dun Laoghaire today but no York Street that I can find. The certificate was issued in 1950 by the General Register Office in Dublin and, says he was Henry Edward Haverty, born to John Haverty (but see below) and Maria (nee Martin).

His 1924 (English) marriage certificate, however, also non-original, says his name was Patrick Joseph Haverty, age 39 (in which case he would have been born in 1885). On the marriage certificate, his father’s name is given as Henry (deceased), profession Farm Bailiff.

We think some of his relatives were on the stage in Dublin and England, perhaps in pantomime. He may have had a sister called Maria (same name as his supposed mother) but my father thinks not. He had several brothers who apparently all went to the USA.

I know most Havertys come from Galway, so whether my grandfather was really born in Kingstown I cannot be sure.

  • Hi there,

Thank you very much for your query to Ireland Reaching Out. I have been looking at Google Maps and I see there is a York Road and a York Terrace. It may have been one of these streets, or else it is a street which no longer exists (i.e. knocked down or name changed).

The different names and different dates of birth are very odd. It might be worth your while rechecking this through the General Register Office (GRO). Maybe the marriage cert is incorrect, or maybe it is from another family member.

Have you checked the census records for 1901 and 1911? These are freely available online and would not take you very long to check.

Please post this message on the Monkstown parish profile page here: http://www.irelandxo.com/group/monkstown-dublin

  • You were correct in thinking that you had Galway heritage through the Havertys as the 1901 Census has John being born in Gaway and he is a coach man ( http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Dublin/Pembroke_East___Donnybrook/Merrion_Road/1285379/ )

In 1911 He is a labourer http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/Pembroke_East/Pembroke_Estate_Cottages/46429/ with Edward already left but two brothers Martin and Patrick still at home

From this we can see that he and Maria who is from Wexford were married in c1875 and John was born c1845-51

    Hope that helps

  • There is a civil record of their marriage in Ballinasloe in 1872  You should be able to get a copy from reords office in Galway as well as getting info on siblings who would then be around on the 1901 Census which would locate his place of origin

I usually call and they are very helpful on the phone
