My great-great grandfather, John Lynch, was born in Ireland around 1800.  I only know that his wife's first name was Mary and once they moved to the US  they had a son (my great-grandfather) Thomas Lynch b Mar 1830 in New York State.  My great-grandfather was a Dectective with the City of Rochester, New York and died May 1906

I will be visiting Ireland in June and am trying to find any information on the location that my gg grandfather/mother were from.

Any suggestions?

  • Hi

My advise would be to gather as much information and records from the New York registers , like marriage certs, death certificates etc. they might reveal important information about the family. Even a census record might tell more . You know when the son was born so you could start by finding a 1840 census record for example.

The names are very common in Ireland so at this stage there is not enough information to pinpoint the correct people in Ireland.

Take note that civil registration in Ireland did not start till 1864, and there is never a guarantee that a record from 1800 or before exists , it very much depends where John Lynch was from as some parishes have older records and some others do not.

Sites that you can try to find further information on John and Mary

    Try www.familysearch.org

Hope this helps a bit, and if you do find some more information do get back to  us and we will help with the trace in Ireland.
