I have reason to believe that my great-grandmother was sent back to Ireland for a few years by her husband in New York and she brought four of her children. The girls attended a convent school in Tuam in 1898-1899. How can I find out if there is a record of them and if there is an ancestral home?

  • My great-grandmother and great grandfather, Martin Donellan (1859-1925 from Tuam) and Honora Melvin (1867 - ? she was probably from Ballandine in County Mayo) were born in Ireland and moved to the US. Michael sent Honora and four of the children - Delia, Margaret, Michael and an infant - back to Tuam in 1898 for at least a year where Delia, Margaret and Michael attended one of the two convent schools. I wrote to both schools, but received no reply. I would love to know if there is any record of their attendance in the school year 1898-1899, any record of an ancestral home and/or relatives.

Martin's parents, who probably lived all their lives in Ireland were: Michael Donellan and Bridget Tighe. Honora's (also called Annie) parents were John Melvin (1830-?) and Margaret Feerick (from Mayo).

Any clues would be greatly appreciated. I also would like to know what parish Tuam is in.

  • Hi Patricia,

You seem to have a lot of work done on this. Well done to you. Tuam is a full parish of its own in Galway. Here is a link to their parish website, where you might get some more leads.

If you do, please report your findings back to us here, we'd love to hear how you are getting on.
