My great-grandfather Thomas John Tierney 1848-1922 came to the US in 1861. His parents were Michael 1820-1895 & Mary 1818-1892 (Connolly) Tierney. Michael's parents were Paul & Kate (Connolly) Tierney. Michael had a sister Catherine Tierney. Thomas John had a sister (name unknown) b. abt 1840, a brother John 1845-1915, and a brother James 1852-1924. All were born in Ireland. All except for Paul & Kate Tierney died in the US. I don't know if Michael & Mary came as a family group with their four children, or if they came individually. Birth dates are approximate. Death dates are exact. Family records show that Thomas John said that he was from Clon- more or Clonmene, Galway. I don't find those parishes. I think he was illiterate, and someone wrote down what he said. I notice that there are Clonkeen and Kilmeen parishes, so I wonder if those are possiblities. My daughters and I will be visiting Galway in August, and we would love to be able to make some family connections.

Do you know much about their emigration? The dates, the reasonwhy they left, who they may have travelled with?..etc..Generally more information was given atthe port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at (e.g.Liverpool, New York, etc.), this could be a good place to find more information. -And perhaps evenfind out an exact place of origin. I have made a list of sites that you can seach on to see can you find any information about your ancestors Good luck sir. Ellis Island:http://www.ellisisland.org/search/passSearch.asp Castlegarden:http://www.castlegarden.org/ US National Archives/Immigration info:http://www.archives.gov/research/immigration/ The Boston Pilot; From October 1831 through October 1921, the Boston Pilot newspaper printed a?Missing Friends? column with advertisements from people looking for ?lost? friends and relativeswho had emigrated from Ireland to the United States. This extraordinary collection of 40,743 recordsis available here as a searchable online database, which contains a text record for each ad thatappeared in the Pilot. http://infowanted.bc.edu/  The next thing you could do is find the counties and places in Ireland your family names are mostprevalent. Look at the website http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/ and perhapssomething will match some other clue you may have found elsewhere? If nothing turnsup ? it is advisable to try different variations of the spellings of the names. If you have a possiblefirst name you could try the Irish Census 1901, 1911 at www.census.nationalarchives.ie/ or the landvaluation record called Griffiths Valuationhttp://askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml

  • Thank you very much for your suggestions. I'll give them a try. Even if we can't find more exact info, we'll deifintely be visiting County Galway to see where they came from.
