As part of its contribution to Heritage Week 2016 Skehana & District Heritage is staging a photographic exhibition of over 300 houses of the landed society in County Galway.

This exhibition was compiled and premiered by the Skehana & District Heritage Group as its contribution to the highly successful Farming & Country Life 1916 event held, in Athenry, in June 2016. Since then it has been on display at the Portumna Workhouse to coincide with their international ‘Big Houses’ conference held there this summer.
This comprehensive body of work is inspired by images included in Patrick Melvin’s book Estates and Landed Society in Galway and has been since extended with images from other sources.
The display itself, printed on waterproofed canvas, is 48 metres in length and almost 3 metres in height and will be erected outdoors on the Skehana Community Development astro-turf sports amenity with excellent viewing and parking facilities.
To accompany our exhibition we have compiled a booklet that gives a brief history and some interesting facts on houses that are local to Skehana and its surrounding areas.Workhouse to coincide with their international ‘Big Houses’ conference held there recently. Currently on distribution at the exhibit itself, information of how to download this booklet will be available in the coming weeks.
A selection of the houses featured in this exhibtion include:
Woodlawn (Trench Family)
Monivea (Ffrench family)
Dunsandle (Daly Family)
