Hello Oughterard !

I am looking to connect with any extended family members from the Oughterard area.  My grandmother Margaret Mary (nee Kenny) Cullinane was born in Oughterard in 1898, grew up on Camp Street and immigrated with sister Delia in 1916 to Boston USA.  My partial lineage is:

Great-grandfather John Francis Kenny (B. Abt. 1865 Headford, Co. Galway), son of Luke and Ellen nee Taaffe Kenny.  Parish records indicate he was born in the Creagh area yet many Petty Session records indicate Headford as birthplace.

Great-grandmother Katherine Faherty (B. 1870 Oughterard, Co. Galway), daughter of Patt Faherty (Abt.1844-1894) and Maria (nee Sullivan) Faherty (Abt.1846-1918).  Maria’s mother was Margaret nee Conneely Sullivan (Abt.1811-1902).  Katherine had 11 siblings and many immigrated to USA in the early 1900s, primarily to the Norwood MA area.

John Kenny and Katherine Faherty married in spring 1890 in Oughterard.  John was a carpenter and Kate a mid-wife for a local Dr. O’Brien (at least later in life). They had 13 children of which only eight lived past the age of 3.  Kate and children immigrated to the Boston area by 1921 and it is told that John decided to stay in Oughterard.

I have attached a group photo of Kate Kenny and daughter Delia (b. 1900) taken about 1915.  Kate and Delia are on the far left. Kate’s sister Maria Cecelia Faherty is believed to be on the far right.  I would love to know who the others are in the photo!

My wish has always been to visit Oughterard one day and that will happen this year on my first trip.  I would love to connect with extended family to share research and knowledge of our families.

Warm regards, Ed O'Brien

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

In case you don't have them, the links below take you to the civil birth records for Margaret and Delia (Bridget). You have to sign-in to see the records. I also attached the 1911 census record for the family and Kate indicated at that time that she had twelve children and either seven or nine living (hard to know for sure). John was away maybe working. I searched for a death record for John in the Oughterard registration district but did not find a record.

Below is a link to the Facebook page for Oughterard. Maybe you could post the photo to see if you get any feedback.

What month are you travelling to Ireland?

  • Thank you very much Roger for the links.  I will post the picture to Facebook. I am traveling in early June and i hope to spend at least a couple days in Oughterard. I have been doing the family genealogy awhile and have some very good records but some holes.  Thanks again.

  • Hi Boston,

I am interested in identifying the husband of Margaret Conneely Sullivan.
I have been unable to find any record of his. Margaret notified the birth of a number of
children who were born to Maria Sullivan and Patrick Faherty of Doon, Killannin parish.

While she gave her address as "Seecon" on a number of occasions she also used the address "Doon".

She was a baptismal sponsor for Mary Faherty who was baptised on September 3rd 1876 in Killannin church. Her name is recorded as "Margaret Conneely" who apparently was from Uggool,
Killannin parish. No record has been found for the marriage of either Margaret Conneelt to ? Sullivan, or the marriage of Patrick Faherty to Maria Sullivan.

There was "Martin Sullivan and a Mathias Sullivan" living closeby in the 1840's. Possible connection?
