My great-grandmother Sarah Josephine Keady was born in Kilcummin Parish, Oughterard about 1892. Her parents were Mary Folan Keady and Michael Keady. She came to Maine, USA and married William Libby. I have submitted her info as an addition to the ancestor database as best as I know it. I would dearly love to make connections that could help me find more information on the generations previous to her, and would be tickled to "meet" any cousins of sorts on here also.

  • Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Your great-grandmother was actually born in 1888. See first link and the fifth record on the page

Her parents were married in 1875 near Spiddal.. See civil marriage record which also shows the names of the fathers of the bride and groom.

    Sarah had the following siblings:Patrick 1878 Honor 1880 Daniel 1883 Martin 1885 Michael 1890 James 1894

The family lived in Cloghermore townland in Kilcummin civil parish  Here is the 1901 census http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Galway/Oughterard/Cloghermore/1394598/

I did not find the family in the 1911 census. Did the entire family emigrate?

  • Thank you Roger. Yes, this is the family. So far as I know, Sarah's parents, Michael and Mary passed in or before 1912. Their eldest daughter Mary married Peter Ridge in Maine in 1906. Patrick settled near Boston, MA and married in 1913. Hannah/Norah/Honor married in MA in 1909. Daniel is in MA by 1910. Martin stayed in Galway and passed in 1978. I don't know if he married. The same with Michael Jr who may have passed in Galway in 1975. James arrived in MA last, and married there. So, two brothers did stay to the best of my knowledge. I also belive that Michael Sr had a brother Thomas who married a Mary Murphey. I know nothing of Mary Folan Keady's family aside from her father's name, Daniel. I have strong ideas that there are Connolly's as I have many DNA connections with that surname in their trees.

  • Thank you! I didn't have Michael Sr's death registration. Sad. Explains why so many children began leaving.

  • Birth

15 JUN 1887Shangurawn, District of Spiddal, Union of Galway, Cty Galway, Ireland

5 May 1905 is when he arrived in Boston

James Keady married Mary Joyce in Boston, Suffolk, MA. However, on their marriage record, they spelled her name as Mary Joice vs. Joyce. They were married at St. Peter and Paul's Church in  South Boston on 2 September 1906.

This is where it gets confusing. They had nine children. The first was Mary Keady, the other 8 children had the last name of Cady. Mary's obituary even says Keady/Cady. However, on the 1940 US Census the last name is Keady and the information was given to the census taker by James who gave them the correct spelling of Keady.

My ancestor is Mary Joyce - she was my great-grandfather's sister. She was born on the Island of Lettermore in the County of Galway.

Please let me know if you need any additional information. I'm the Joyce family historian because I'm the genealogist in the family. If you want I could put you in touch with Mary & James' great-grandaughter
