I was interested in trying to find the church that created a record I obtained from the Family History Library's microfilm collection. It is the marriage of James Moran and Mary Daly which took place on 14 Nov 1861. The page is taken from Film #1279216, Items 20-21. Title "Parochial registers of Portumna, 1830-1891".
Film notes:
Microfilm of original records at Ballinasloe, Co. Galway.
Some writing is faded and illegible.
The Catholic parish of Portumna includes the civil parishes of Kilmalinoge and Lickmolassy, and was formerly called Parish of Kilmalinoge and Lickmolassy. Chapels are located in Liskmolassy and in the town of Portumna.
Does anyone know if there was more than one Catholic church in Portumna in 1861 and the name of the church/churches?
Thanks,
Barbara

Roger,
Thank you for reply and that information. It does not specify, but I would assume that the Catholic church that served the parish of that time was St. Brigid's as it was built in 1827 (the first St. Brigid's). I found a photo of the first St. Brigid's church on this Rootsweb site: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~irishchurches/RC%20Churches/Portumna,%20Gortanumera%20and%20Boula.html. The site does not say where it is located but what a shame it is all boarded up. If I lived close I would love to peak in the windows and take some pictures. We do not have any buildings that old where I live.

Hello Barbara,
I am from and live in Portumna. That is indeed the old St. Brigid's Church. It is now privately-owned and due to the recession, the plans to restore/develop it haven't happened so that it is in a worse state than in the photo. I know the owner personally so that I can put you in touch if you plan to visit Portumna.
It was a sports community centre in the seventies and I well remember playing badminton there! I have no idea what state it is in inside or how much still survives.
Best wishes
