My Grandparents lived in Portumna; Grandmother, Margaret Quinn (b 1900) but my Grandfather Birchmans John Murphy (b 1908). I have used several sources to try and find any information without success. I believe they actually left for New York where they married before returning to Ireland then leaving for London.
I believe my Grandfather may have been born in Athy.
I would like to add any relatives to my family tree. I hope you can help

To Margot and Carolyn,
Firstly thankyou so much for the very quick reply and the information. A little I knew but most was new to me and has helped a great deal with my Mother's family (tree). I know my Mother was actually born in New York before being sent back to Ireland, are there such things as 'return'records?
On my Grandfather's side, I remember vising Ireland in the 1960's with my Grandparents and meeting and Aunt Kay and also staying with an Uncle Joe, do people often change, shorten or use second names? How common would it have been from someone from Athy to meet someone from Portumna? I realise I am asking a lot of questions, but this is the first time I have got some good information, so I thank you again. Oh and yes please to the shipping details Margot. My thanks again.

Hi Alan
you ask.....
I know my Mother was actually born in New York before being sent back to Ireland, are there such things as 'return'records?
No, you have to search. In Ancestry you can get a hint......which helps.do people often change, shorten or use second names?
Oh Yes they do all the time......Confirmation names, nicknames or abbreviated are common as well.
My cousin is Emby. Her name in Mary Bridget MB = EmbyHow common would it have been from someone from Athy to meet someone from Portumna?
Looks like they met in the USA. But yes it is quite common.please email me, can you put Quinn/Murphy Portumna in the subject box so I will know who you are, thanks

Alan,
I can search Ancestry for their immigration records back to Ireland if you don't have an account. What was your mother's first name/year of birth? Do you know the approximate year they returned to Ireland? Were there other siblings in the family?
Regards,
Carolyn

Hi Carolyn, Alan replied to my email.
I have sent him all the records of going to the USA and many more from Ireland.
He is away for a few days.
I may need you to help Alan, as I m leaving Ancestry at the end of the month.
I did explain that you can get records from familysearch in Ireland up to 1958 and the UK 1999.
Thanks Carolyn

Good afternoon Margot and Carolyn.
Once again many thanks for your help and information, it has been really good to put a tree together.
Carolyn, many thanks for your offer regarding my Mother's return. Her name is Mary Margaret (Maura), born 26 October 1933. I have no idea of date of return other than it was quite early on and she may not have returned with her parents. She was an only child, but I believe other members of the Quinn family also went to the US.
I am aware that Catherine (Kate) Murphy had three children, how could I find out about them?
As ever, I will be grateful for any information and help.
Kind regards
Alan

Alan,
I looked for the return records, but did not find anything. The surname Murphy is the most popular name in Ireland, and names like John, Mary and Catherine are common too. Looked for a marriage record for Catherine (Kate) Murphy in Athy, Kildare where she was from, but found nothing, so could not locate her children either. Traditionally, the couple married in the bride's parish, but she could have married elsewhere during those years. I did not locate any marriage record for Michael Murphy either. If you haven't used the free site irishgenealogy.ie, you can search further under the civil tab for your family if you get more clues about them in the future.
Regards,
Carolyn

Hi Carolyn
Once again, thank you for your time with my questions.
Can you tell me, where can I research 'returning' records and also people leaving Ireland?
I find it interesting that people can just 'disappear', but it seems the case and I agree with your comments about the surnames I am looking for, needles and haystacks come to mind!
Thank you again Alan

Alan,
You can search arrival & departure to and from the US if you have an Ancestry account. You can also do free searches of arrival records on the Ellis Island site statueofliberty.org as well as the site dunbrody.com.
Good luck!
