I'm looking for any info about my Grandfather, Thomas Hutchinson, born 1885 (?) in Ireland. He lived in Portumna, County Galway until 1903 when he sailed to the US and arrived @ Ellis Island in 1904. He was listed on the ship manifest as a passenger in steerage, deemed "healthy" and stated his occupation as a carpenter. Looking for his birth record which would list the names of my Great-Grandparents. I think my Great-Grandfathers name was George Hutchinson. My Great-Grandparents remained in Ireland. I'm hoping to find info on them as I think I may have family living in Ireland that I don't know about. If anyone can help me find these records I would be very grateful. I'm trying to build a family tree for my Grandchildren. Thank you so very much.

    The only Thomas Hutchinson birth index record that I could find in the Portumna registration district was a Thomas Hutchinson born in 1882. The birth index record is below. If you want a copy of this record, you can contact the GRO www.groireland.ie Fill out their form and provide the info on the index record. Cost around 4 euros for a copy.


    The National Archives census site has been down since yesterday. www.census.nationalarchives.ie When it is back up you can view the actual return. I have a site which has the 1901 census for Galway and a few other counties. I found the record below. Ballynakill parish is not far from Lickmolassy parish which includes Portumna so it is likely that this is your family although the father's name is not George. The age fits the 1882 year of birth.
