I am adopted and looking for information about family that may have lived in Spiddal over 50 years ago.

My birth Mother was Julia Bernadette Conneely Dob, 26/10/1958 or 26/09/1958.

Her Parents ( I think) were John Conneely and Annie Conneely ( maiden name- Larkin). I dont know birth dates but they must have been born roughly between 1900- 1930

Both Parents passed away when she was about 13 years old, the cause of death was unknown but must have been in the early 70s maybe 1970-1973.

She went to live with friends after her parents death  to complete her schooling but became pregnant at the age of 16 (1974).At this point she left Ireland and moved to London to live with sisters that had moved there.  There were at least 2 older sisters that had moved away before the parents passed away.

If this story sounds familiar to anyone and they have more information I would be most grateful

Attached copy of the 1911 Irish Census for Larkin in Bealadangan -  Electoral District of Lettermore.

If you write to the Lettermullan and Gorumna Heritage Centre, including all the information you have, they may be able to assist.

A search of Subscription Site www.rootsireland.ie did not show any children born to John Walsh and Anne Larkin.

  • I have received a copy of the Civil Birth Record for Julia Bernadette Conneely with the address: Derroe. Parents: John Conneely and Annie Larkin. Date of birth 26th October 1958. I am unable to forward it due to the size of the document.

    There are civil records of the following who may be siblings of Julia B.: Mary - 1949 - Annie - 1950 - Brigid - 1951 - Catherine - 1953 - Margaret - 1955 - Barbara - 1956 - Norah - 1960 - Sarah - 1963.

In relation to address: Derroe, it is not recorded in Griffith's Valuations. There is a Derroogh North and a Derroogh South which are in the Civil Parish of Kilcummin - Co. Galway.

  • Thank you Patricia, Eileen and McCoy for all your help.

McCoy, your last paragraph says that Derroe is not listed in Griffiths evaluations but there is a Derrough North and a Derrough South in the civil parish of kilcummin,

Can I ask, what exactly is Griffiths evaluation?  and how do I find an actual address for my birth mothers family ?

  • Sara,

There is a map record of DERROOGH which is close to Rossaveel.

I am unable to post it to you, due to restrictions on this Site. It would appear to be in the townland of Derroogh South.

There is a school marked close to the lane entrance.

I recommend that you check Derroogh South on Oughterard Heritage - Free Site. There is an article by Antoinette Lydon with a lot of information on the area.

1901 census for Conneely Derroogh South attached.
