  •  Seán, I am so pleased to see your post. Are you interested in the family history for the Mahon's? I have been collecting info on the Mahon siblings. Michael Mahon, my grandfather, is Mary Mahon Cooneys brother. I have a tree on ancestry.com that I will share with you. Mary was the last sibling that I needed to find. Are there any photos of Mary?  Do you know of the siblings that remained in Ireland- Margaret married to John Murray and John Joe who died in the early 1960's? I am so happy to meet  a Cooney descendant. Carol

  • Hi Sean, Have not heard from you in awhile. I was wondering if you were interested in learning more about your Mahon ancestors? Mary Mahon Cooney's mother was Bridget Leonard Mahon. I have recently found Leonard/Lennon  cousins from Australia, New Zealand and the USA.  Carol

    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_re…

Next I am attaching information from the 1901 and 1911 Census of Ireland.

In checking Irish genealogy.ie for civil records for the Cooneys, there are numerous records available for free to assist in your search. I will use William as an example

    Birth link  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_retur…

I believe most of the births are available but in checking further regarding marriages I did not find any record of the children being married in their home Parish of Killimore. Usually the daughters

I did find Thomas Cooney's Death Registration in 1932 see attached link:

    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu…

Mary Mahon Cooney was present at the time of his demise and then I found Mary's death in 1938 see Attached link:

    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu…

Her son William was present at the time of her death. There are more records available but I will let you look at this web site for more if you have a need.

Most of the information is limited to the Irish 100 year rule for births. 75 years for marriages and 50 Years for deaths. If you have a contact in Ireland there is much more information available from a GRO Research Center. I still have relatives in Galway, and Longford who on occassion have provided me with more recent Civil Registrations. To do this online with the GRO is not inexpensive.

Please feel free to contact me at my e-mail address yagermeister1865@verizon.net. I am from the USA

My family lived in Clonkelagh, Portumna, Galway which is not on any map in Ireland and is referred to as Muingbaun and one of my distant cousins still lives there. I have other online sites I can give you to help with your search

  • I just discovered this website!  Mary Mahon was my maternal grandmother.  She and my grandfather, Thomas Cooney, lived on the farm they called Tiernascragh.  My mother Margaret was one of their children.  She emigrated to the US in 1929 and married another Irish emigre named Michael Joyce, who came from Barnaderg.  Their five children grew up in America, now with various grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  I would be very interested in receiving any information concerning this family tree.  Thanks in advance.  Tom Joyce - tfjoyce@gmail.com

  • Hi All,

The Cooney Family are well remembered in Tiernascragh.  I had a chat with local IrelandXO volunteer Pat Madden about the family about a month ago - and he was aware of many strands of the family, and where they had gone to.  He also knows where the old Cooney house stood.  (Not sure from our conversation whether it is still in existance).  I'll try to connect Pat into this thread.

Would love to find all the Cooneys.  I know he said one part of the family had gone to the UK and had returned to Tiernascragh in recent years.
