The oldest record that I have for my second great grandfather James J Loonie is from the Test Books of the New York Emigrant Savings Bank, transaction date 10 Sept 1860. It states that he was born in 1829 in Tralee, Kerry. He came to the US in 1850 on the "Universe". He was married to Mary Murphy and they had 3 children. His address was 162 East 22nd Street and his occupation was a Carter. He may have been part of a family in New York involved in brownstone and stone cutting.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
www.irishgenealogy.ie is a free Irish government site which has Co. Kerry church records. There is an 1822 baptismal record in Tralee for a James Luoney. There are also siblings. Your James may have made himself younger when he came to America or this is a different James.
I will alert our parish liaison in Tralee that you have posted a message.

There are 3 returns for Looney in the land records c 1850 Griffiths Valuation, in the town of Tralee, Rae St. and Bridge St.
25 returns in the town of Tralee in 1901
Can you give us the children's names? Have you found them in the Federal Census?
Did your James marry Margaret in New York? Have you got the marriage Cert? And James death Cert which may contain his parents' names?
Looking forward to hearing from you again.
