I am looking for info. or ideas, Re: Catherine Connell & John Daly, my gr., gr. grandparents, lived/had children in Scalp, Brosna, Kerry, abt. 3 miles from there Knocknadariv, on docs. Children, Batholomew,  Mary, Timothy 1867, Margaret Daly Broderick, 12/24/1850, Elizabeth, 1871, Daniel, 1873, John M Daly, 1876, and my great grandfather, Michael Daly 1878-1956 , who married Margaret M. Morris from Glamorgan, Wales. One of their sons, Michael jr. was also born in Kerry, the rest of them in Wales. They came to the US (Margaret & Michael with children) to Chicago, then Downers Grove, IL.

I have searched high and low for a birth or death for Catherine Connell, found a possibiltiy of her baptism, July 2, 1836, Roman Catholic, Glen Flesk, Kerry, Ireland, father John Connell, * Ellen McCarthy,  I really have no way to substantiate this: I have the children's bap. records, from Brosna Church, & civil reg. (Tralee), but can't find birth, death, marriage, or burial sites for her, or John, listed as Roman Catholic. I only have one census, March 31st, 1901, Kerry, Kilmurry, Knocknadarriv where John Daly, est. b.d. 1836 living with son Daniel, (Army Pensioner) listed as father in law, with daughter Margaret Daly Broderick, married to William, occupation, Gamekeeper. John Daly is 65, & a widower, ocup, agricultural laborer. Says he cannot read or write, but speaks both the Irish & English language, as they all do.

I some questions, too, re:  Timothy Daly, their son, came to the US in 1897 & married Nora Curtin (Listowel/father John) after she died, he had two daughters in Chicago, when he married Kathryn Byrne (born Dublin City, father John) , lived in Evanston, Chicago, IL. and it was who my grandfather stayed with when he first came here.

If anyone knows of them, or has any ideas, please let me know.  Thanks in advance for any support with this. Take care now!  warriorartist@cox.net

  • Dear Mercy,

I have looked at the information that you have posted on the Daley/Connell family history. I too have failed to find any birth record for Catherine Connell. However, I think it is unlikely that she would have come form Glenflesk as this is quite a distance from Brosna and most couples at that time would have come from the same locality. It is more likely that she would have been a daughter of a Patrick Connell who had a house and a few acres of land in Brosna West around 1850:

Note that the names of the sponsors of John and Catherine's firat three recorded children were Patrick and Margaret Connell. These were perhaps Catherine's parents as their eldest daughter was also called Margaret.

Members of the Daly and O Connell families are buried in  Brosna Cemetery, some as recently as the last decade:

This means that members of these families are still living in the Scalp/Knockadarrive area of Brosna.

The following are some historic inscriptions from headstones in Brosna Cemetery:

  • Thank you so very much for your help, your generous sharing of practical information, ideas/opinions.  I have learned much from your post, and feel fortified and inspired to continue my search.  I am just overwhelmed with gratitude.  I am sure I have family still living there, at least cousins and it gave me the idea to try to contact them, as well.

I agree about her not coming from Glenfesk, now, too.  I was told many people came to Brosna, or Kerry, because it was a market town, and they could more easily make a living, but I haven't found anything to substantiate that yet, either, and it does not make sense she would have come alone, etc.

I have much information to check into now.  Please know your helping makes a huge difference, and I am very grateful, more than words can say.  What a wonderful way to give back to the world.
