My grandmother, Ellen "Nellie" C. Brosnan, was born in Knockbrack, Knocknagoshel about 1902 and died young on Apr 1, 1946 in New York City of an aneurysm.  I have photos, death and grave info for the US (where she emigrated to in 1920), but can't find evidence of her birth or USA arrival.  I'm a subscriber to ancestry.com and also often check irishgenealogy.ie.  She shares her name with a cousin and older sister, both of whom sadly died as young girls, and I can find life info of these relatives but not my grandmother.  If I didn't exist, I'd wonder if she did. :-)  Do any members have advice on locating hard-to-find people?

Attached small photo shows, left to right, my grand-aunts Mollie and Kitty, and grandmother Nellie.

Thank you,

Mike

  • I should have also asked, what was her Mother and Fathers names.
There are a few Ellen Brosnan's at that time.

  • Hi, Margot, and thanks for your reply.  Yes, you're right that her older sister was about 8 when she died.  My grandmother's parents' names are Cornelius Brosnan/Brosnahan and Bridget Collins.  Con was a cooper from Knockbrack, and Bridget from Abbeyfeale.  They married in 1884, Bridget had 9 children and 7 survived to adulthood.  Con's parents' house still stands, though is now used to store lumber and turf.

As to my grandmother, Nellie Brosnan, I took birth dates of her immediately older and younger brothers and added and subtracted 40 weeks (for mother's pregnancy).  That narrows her birthdate down to early June 1902 to mid September 1903.  But no luck finding her birth or baptism date or date of arrival in the USA, supposedly 1920.  It has been a challenge!

Many thanks for giving it some thought!

  • Hi, Margot, and yes that is her older sister (whose name she shares) who died around 1901 as a little girl. So strange that all siblings except my grandmother show up in records, not even in USA arrival manifests. I'll post updates if I find anything.  Thank you for your help!

  • Hi, Margot.  The 1894 Knockbrack, Knocknagoshel birth record is in fact my grandmother!  It turns out that as time went on, she stretched her birth year more and more. :-)  Even her headstone shows a 1902 birth year, the source of this confusion.  Since her mother had 9 children and only 7 survived, we assumed one that didn't survive was an older Ellen.  (The same happened with two Daniels, whose records we have.)  My cousins and I guess that as she reached her late 20s and remained single, she made herself younger.  No idea of the real reason, of course. I finally found the ship manifest with her US arrival, indicating the 1894 birth year, verifying there is no older Nellie.  That discovery allowed me to find her as a teenage servant at a dress shop in Abbeyfeale, then a servant in a US household, a return to Ireland, and another return to the US, getting a little younger each time.  At that rate, she is probably younger than me by now.  :-D  Many thanks again for your help.
