I will be in Kerry in mid-May 2013 with several of my Irish American family. Of late I've been digging into my ancestry as much as possible, and have been trying to pinpoint the place of my grandmother's birth and early childhood. She was Honora Hickey, ne? Ahern (b. 1925). I believe her mother (Honora Ahern) hailed from Knocknaglogh and her father (Cornelius "Con" Hickey) from Duagh. I know that my great-great-grandparents (Mary Cronin & Con Hickey Sr.) were married at St. Brigid's in Duagh.  Can someone on your end help me connect with the right resources to dig a bit further? I would love to track down the old family farm and find out if any of the buildings still exist, etc. I also believe that I must have several direct living Irish relatives in or around Co. Kerry. After my grandmother came to NYC in the late 1920's and my great-grandparents passed, my father's generation had no contact info for the Irish family abroad. We will be in town May 11-25 (nearly 7 of us - Hickey & Ahern descendants). Many of us have never been to Ireland before and are certainly looking forward to the adventure. Many thanks in advance!

  • I did a quick search on churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie and found a marriage record that is likely that of  Mary Cronin and Con Hickey. They were married 29 February 1896 and both were from the Townland of  Knockaubrack. Con's parents were listed as James Hickey and Ellen Lyons. Mary's parents were John Cronin and Mary McKenna.

You might be able to trace back another generation or so by searching that site.

You'll want to visit St. Brigids to view the actual records and take a picture.

    Hope that helps!

  • Hi, just seen your post.  Cornelius Hickey's mother Ellen Lyons was a sister to my g grandfather Patrick.  I am looking for their parents marriage record.  They are John Lyons and Mary Dillane.  I today left a post asking for help with this.

    Regards.

  • As I posted on the other thread, record keeping of marriages in Duagh during that period was quite sporadic. While I know my great great grandparents were married (their children were designated as legitimate in the baptism records), My cousin painstakingly searched the records for their (and other) marriage with no luck.

  • Hi, James Hickey (b 1840) and Ellen Lyons (b 1841) are my mom's GGgrandparents - Con was the brother of my Mom's grandfather, Thomas Francis (b1872) - there were 10 children of James & Ellen (Ellie) in total.

James & Ellen are about as far as I have got with that line currently - though I know that James has some connection with Lyreacrumpane (possible place of birth) - a hamlet/village not far from Duagh.

James & Ellen were married on 31 Jan 1867 in Listowel. I also have notes that James lived in Lyreacrompane, Knockaunbrack & Trienearagh - though I'm not sure where I got this informationf rom at the moment!

Hope you have a grand time in Listowel/Duagh & the surrounds.  It's a very beautiful part of the world.

  • Hi All,

I have corresponded with Kristen and Janice before, but I don't believe I've corresponded with Claire. James and Ellen are my great-grandparents. Their youngest son, Jeremiah, is my grandfather, and yes, the Hickeys are from Lyrecrompane. My grandfather was born and raised in Lyrecrompane and my mother grew up nearby in Rathoran. You can see the Hickeys living in Lyrecrompane in the 1901 and 1911 census. The nice thing also is that their married children are living next to them as well. A family member told me that James's parents were James Hickey and Mary Pierse, but I cannot confirm this as the dates of their children's births seem off by 10 years. I'm sure they are relatives nontheless. Plus James and Ellen's marriage record has William as the father, but again, no confirmation if this is correct.

    Regards,

    Joanne

  • Hi all,

My mother was a Hickey from Lyrecrompane. My grandparents names were Thomas and Mary (Minnie?).

    They had about 9children

    James, Jeremiah(Jerry),Cornelis(Con), Patrick

the girls names were Ellen or Eileen (known as Ellie), Mary ,Kathleen (Kathy), Johanna (Hannah) and Margaret( Peggy)

I know that two of the sons died a year after the other, in their late teens or early 20's both from septicemia from rupured appendix. That would have been in the late 20's/early 30's

Mary (Minnie) would have died in the early 40's she would have been around late 40yrs/ early 50yrsold when she died.

Ellen(Ellie) married a Lyons.         lived in Lyrecrompane

    Mary married a Clifford                          "

Kathleen (Kathy) married a Michael oConnor lived on the Ballybunion road

My mother Hannah married William Dillon(son of Stephen Dillon and Annie Quille from Treineragh). Lived in Dublin

Margaret(Peggy) married Michael Mc Coy and lived in London

I think Jerry went to England (Newcastle?)

There were almost two distinct families , as the older children were grown up and married by the time the younger children were born -- so there would have been a considerable age difference between the oldest and the youngest

can anyone shed more light on this family as I think there are still children and grandchildren living there in the area

    many Thanks

    Celeste

  • Hi Celeste,

You mother and my mother would be first cousins and that would make us second cousins!  So, nice to meet you cousin!  My mother grew up in Rathoran, so I wonder if our mothers' knew each other.

I have your grandparents in my tree and they are listed in the 1911 census together with their first 3 children, James, Cornelius and Jeremiah.  I didn't have information about the other children, so thank you for providing that in your post.  Your grandfather Thomas is my grandfather Jeremiah's brother.  I have Thomas as the 3rd olest living child and my grandfather is the youngest.

If you need information about Thomas's siblings and parents, I can provide you with that.

Would you by any chance have a photo of Thomas and Minnie?

    Regards,

    Joanne

  • Jfsnyc & Celeste - I think we are all related!!

Celeste - Hannah is my Mom's aunt (she is Mary Hickey & John (Jack) Clifford's daughter - one of 13 offspring they had!). Hannah is my daughters middle name (because of my Mom's recommendation after her Auntie Hannah!) & Celeste was very nearly my confirmation name (again because of my Mom's recommendation of her cousin Celeste!) Small world...

My Mom also talks about her Uncle Jerry ;)

  • Hi Claire,

What a coincidence ,Hannah and Peggy were the youngest in the family.  I remember Mary from when i was a child and we would visit.  My Mother,Hannah died in 1988 and my father in the early 90's, she was 62 when she died.

I have two sisters Anna and Patricia both living in Ireland and i am living in France

Peggy is still alive but in a nursing home in London , she is 87years old . Peggy has three children , James, Michael and Celeste.  James died last month very suddenly , he was only 54.

What is your Mothers name? I remember a Maureen Clifford who married an English man and lived somewhere in England... I think I have a photo of her and her sisters would have been taken in the 60/70's

My email address is celestevogeldillon@orange .fr

So if you have any more information please contact me

  • Hi Celeste,

Sadly I don't remember any of my Grandparents - Mary died in 1971 (age 60), before I was born & is buried in Listowel Cemetery along with her husband Jack (d 1979).

Unfortunately, I feel many of our family have died at what we would consider to be a very young age. Sorry to hear about James also so recently

My mom is Catherine Christina - Maureen's younger sister. Maureen & her husband are still well & in Hertfordshire - most of Mom's brothers are around the Herts/North West London area although most are elderly & in poor health now. Mom's sisters are spread about - North London, Gloucestershire, Cardiff, West Midlands & I believe only one remains in Ireland in the Tipperary area.

I will email you more about living relations as I don't feel it's appropraite on a public board!

  • Hi Joanne.

Does NYC stand for New York City?    Sorry i don't have a photo of Thomas and Minnie .

But I would appreciate it if you could forward me the information you have re-Thomas's siblings. I would imagine that our mothers probably did know one another when they were young . Although my mother was sent to boarding school St Leonards in Hastings in England in the late 30's early 40's. She returned to Kerry before the end of the war as the school was evacuated .  Her mother had just died at that time too .

If you have any more information i would appreciate it as I know quite a lot about my Fathers family but not so much abot my mothers

    Many Thanks

    Celeste

  • Hi all,

I'm a little late to the party here, so not sure if anyone will even reply.  My grandmother was Ellen (Ellie) Lyons (nee Hickey) born to Thomas Hickey and Mary (Minnie) Courtney. My great-great-grandparents I believe were James Hickey and Ellen Lyons and on the other side Jerry Courtney and Mary Sugrue.  I thought I'd reach out and touch base, but it has been 5 years since anyone last posted here so it's a shot in the dark.

Hello from the kingdom of Kerry :) I stumbled across this thread by sheer accident while looking something up on google. My grandmother was Mary hickey she married John (jack) Clifford in listowel. Their daughter Bridget (my mother) still lives in Kerry, she moved to Cardiff when young but returned to Ireland in 1982. Maureen the eldest daughter married Bernard tanner they reside in Britain as do all of my aunts and uncles. Mike Clifford has also returned to listowel he now resides in the family home in Woodford listowel. My mother too speaks of Cathy on the ballybunion road. It is a small world I wish I had seen this post earlier when you were all visiting Kerry. Mary and her husband John are buried in the cemetery in listowel she passed away in 1971 just months after my eldest brother John was born. It's lovely to see you trying to trace your roots had you any luck when you came to visit? We live 20 kilometres from lyrecrompane. I will be seeing my mum tomorrow she will be delighted with this and if she has any more to add I will update. Anyone who wants to get in touch please contact me on awaytrade610@gmail.com

    Kind regards, Carol
