Hi all,

I’m trying to trace information on the above relatives but it’s not a straightforward case unfortunately. My great grandmother was born in London to Patrick Tangny & Margaret Brown but for some reason, possibly due to Margaret’s poor health, was from the age of 3, brought up by Maurice Tangny & Mary Brown. She appears on the 1871 census as their 3 year old niece but in following censuses is listed as their daughter. I’m unsure if Maurice & Patrick were brothers or if Margaret & Mary were related. I believe that Maurice also had a half sister Catherine Brown, her father being James Brown. She married John Flynn in London in 1854. Again no idea of any connection between her and the other Browns. As far as dates go I think Maurice was born circa 1828, Mary c1831, Patrick c1821. Catherine c1825.

There is a record of a marriage between a Maurice Tangny and Ellen Sullivan in 1816 and both of the London marriages of Maurice/Mary and Catherine/John had a Margaret Sullivan as a witness.

Apologies for the long winded enquiry but any assistance would be very much appreciated.

Kind regards,

John Tangny

Killeentierna is a great parish to have ancestors. Records go back to 1801   Here is the parish register https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0664  but more importantly all the available Co. Kerry church records are searchable at the free site irishgenealogy.ie  Church record TAB. Possibly you have already searched the site

I did some queries and did not find a baptismal record for a Catherine Brown with father James.

The earliest Maurice Tangney baptismal record in Killentierna was in 1843 too late based on your message. There is a Maurice Tangney record in Tralee in 1822 and another one in Killorglin in 1831.

Any other clues? Have you taken a general DNA test (not a Y-DNA test).

  • Hi, If you take a look at the 1861 UK census, it says Maurice was born in Killarney. I hope this is helpful.

  • Hi Patricia.

Thanks for your replies. I’ve got census records for Maurice up until 1881 as well as his death certificate but nothing from his early years. The 1937 record is too late unfortunately.
    Regards,

    John

  • Roger,

I’ve gone back to the NLI website and found a record for a baptism in August 1827 in Killarney (Microfilm 04262/05). I had seen it years ago but discounted it as the transcript on the Irish Genealogy site gave the name as Mary. However I think it may indeed be Maurice. The parents also had a son Patrick in 1820 which ties in with the other details I have for him. Many thanks for your help.

    Regards,

    John
