My G-Grandfather Patrick Madigan was born in Ireland about 1827 and migrated to the USA in 1855. He lived with his wife & family in the town of Dudley, Pennsylvania. I have not been able to confirm where exactly he was born, However, there were several other Madigans in the same small coal mining town and I have been able to document that they were all from the Ballylongford - Tarbert area of County Kerry. A few details for these other Madigan families in Dudley:

John Madigan married Mary Enright on 28 Feb 1843 in Ballylongford Parish. The first 4 of their children were born in Ballylongford Parish.

Catherine Madigan married Matthew Mulvihill in Lislaughtin, Ballylongford Parish about 1844.The first two of their children were born in Ballylongford Parish.

Michael Madigan's Pennsylvania death certificate states that he was born in 1832 in Kilcolgan, Ballylongford Parish. His parents are listed as William Madigan and Catherine O'Connor.

Thomas Madigan married Johanna Jones in 1854 in Ballylongford Parish. The first 3 of their children were born in Ballylongford Parish. His Pennsylvania death certificate lists his parents as Patrick Madigan & Catherine Ryan.

Hanora Madigan's Pennsylvania death certificate states that she was born in Kilgolgan, Tarbert about 1830. She married Michael O'Brien in Pennsylvania.

Bridget Madigan married John Carr in Ballylongford Parish on 13 Feb 1831. She was from Kilcolgan. The first 2 of their children were born in Ballylongford Parish.

Based on my research, it appears that most of these Madigans in Dudley, PA were likely members of the family of either 1) Patrick Madigan & Catherine Ryan who lived in Kilpaddoge/Tarmon West or the family of 2) William Madigan & Catherine O'Connor who lived in Kilcolgan Lower, both per the 1840-1860 Griffith's Valuation data.

A Patrick Madigan was born to the Patrick & Catherine Madigan family in 1823. Another Patrick Madigan was born to the William & Catherine Madigan family in 1824. Either Patrick could be my G-Grandfather (or not)

My summary: I think it is very likely that since all the other Madigan families living in Dudley, PA in the 1860-1900 timeframe were originally from the Ballylongford-Tarbert area, that my G-Grandfather was also from that area. But I have exhausted all the available resources online to try to confirm this. In addition, I have not been able to find any record of any old Madigan graves in the graveyards in the Ballylongford-Tarbert area. I had hoped to find the graveyards where the members of these two Madigan families who remained in Ireland (the parents, siblings, etc) are buried.

So I am hoping to locate someone in the area who may have family tree information on the Madigan families from this area in the 1800s.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

www.irishgenealogy.ie is a free Irish government site which has Co. Kerry church records. I searched for Patrick Madigan and there were records in 1823 and 1824. The 1824 showed a Patrick Madigan baptismal record where the townland was Kilcolgan. See below.
