I am looking for my great grandparents, Jeremiah McCarthy and Johanna Fitzgerald. I think that they were both from County Kerry, but do not know for sure.
Jeremiah was born in Ireland to Eugene McCarthy and Bridget Sullivan. I have his birth date as November 1863. He immigrated to the US about 1887 and lived in Newport, Newport County,
Rhode Island until his death in 1937.
I do not have definite information on siblings, but have found possibilities in Michael McCarthy, Thade McCarthy and Eugene McCarthy all born in the 1860s and 1870s to a Eugene McCarthy and Bridget Sullivan in County Kerry.
Johanna was born in Ireland to Francis/Frank Fitzgerald and Mary Sullivan. I have her birth date as March 1869. She immigrated to the US about 1888 and lived in Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island until her death in 1956.
According to Johanna's obituary, she had 10 siblings. The only one I know about is her brother Frank who was born in 1863 or 1865 and also immigrated to the US and lived in Newport until his death.
Jeremiah and Johanna married on 22 Nov 1894 in Newport. They became the parents of 8 children, 1 daughter and 7 sons, one of which was my grandfather, Francis John McCarthy.
Any help would be greatly appreicated.

Dear Sherry, congrats on all the work you have already done. I searched for Dunkilla and found that it is sometimes described as Dunkilla, Tahilla
Here is the link on a current map
here is a link to the old Civil Parish map
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~irlker/kilcrohane.html
It lists Tahilla but not Dunkilla
Church records list for Dunkilla
McCarthy Tahilla 1901

Let me know if anything pops

On the Fitzgerald side, I also see an Abbie Fitzgerald m Shea who died in Newport RI with same parent names:

If she's related, these could be her and the parents in 1901:

Looks like she emigrated the same year according to the 1930 census:

hi sherry
it may be totally unrelated but
just wondering did you have any relatives with the last name Bailey ? my grandads sister was McCarthy after she married and she came from county kerry, castle gregory although i don't know if any of those relatives went to the USA i do know that my grandfather John Joseph Bailey left castle gregory to go to Newport in Wales.
Doesn't sound too promising but thought i should simply askRyan

Hi Sherry,
Johanna Fitzgerald was my maternal grandmother's sister, grandmother Abbie (Abby) Fitzgerald who married Dennis J Shea. They lived on Pope St in Newport RI. My father James Francis Shea was their only surviving son.. My father was first cousin to Francis John McCarthy since Johanna and Abby were sisters.. They lived a few blocks apart Newport fifth ward where many Irish had homes.
I realize this discussion began 5 years ago but hopefully someone is monitoring so we can connect and share information since it appears we are most probably related.
