Not sure what information you have but I attached links to the 1901 and 1911 censuses. Daniel and Johanna had eleven children. I located the best possible Daniel Gallivan baptismal record in 1845. Not sure if this is the same Daniel.The townland would be Feoramore. I also looked for possible death records. I located one for Daniel in 1923 and a possible record for Johanna in 1941. Thanks Roger. I wonder how likely it is to find someone living who knows of an actual link!? With 11 children you would think they left some relatives even though a few of them ended up in Can/US and the rest stayed in Ireland.

I just came accross this while researching my grandparents. There are a Frances and Timothy Gallivan, children of Daniel, travelling on the SS Adriatic to NY. Timothy, Frances and three other passengers are from Tuosist and a sixth is from Lehud.

The Gallivans and two of the other passengers are all headed to the same address. Are these your Gallivans by any chance?

Hi Pat. Yes Tim and Frances were my great uncle and aunt. Daniel and JOhanna were my Great grandparents. Are you related?

How did your research lead you to this post? I am not very efficient searching but am willing to participate if I can help. I dont have any photos of the Gallivans while in Ardea but I do have a photo of my grandmother (Helena) taken early 1900s.

Sorry for the late response. Somehow I missed the emails.

My grandfather, Patrick Sullivan, was on the same ship. The link is below. It looks like they were all travelling together.

The Gallivans, Cornelius Hartnett, Norah McCarthy and Patrick arrived in NY aboard the Adriatic on October 22, 1914. They were all headed to the same address 304 West 143 Street. If you look at the second page you see the name Nellie Lynch. She was Norah's sister. The McCarthys were first cousins to Patrick. Not sure if they were related to the Gallivans but I have Patrick's grandmother as Mary Galvin.

I'll attach a photo that I think was taken not long after arrival in the US. Pat and his brother John are sitting. Jim McCarthy  is standing with his hands on Pat's shoulders. Could the man next to Jim be Tim Gallivan?

Thanks for the pic Pat as soon as I looked at it I saw a resemblance between him and my father I think it's very likely to be Tim.Galvin or Gallivan ...the spelling changed

I read your post about the passengers on the Adriatic, and am interested in particular about Daniel Sullivan from Lehud, since I have Sullivan ancestors and ancestors from Lehud. I tried to trace the clue you left about their intent to head to 304 W 134th Street, and hoped to find them in the 1915 New York State Census. https://www.ancestry.com/interactive/2703/32848_B094075-00242?backurl=&ssrc=&backlabel=Return#?imageId=32848_B094075-00245 (go to page 4 of 23). Unfortunately, I can't find them. If you have any other clues that might help my search, plese let me know.

BTW, are you a Sullivan?

Hi Don,

I sent a link to the Adriatic manifest as well as the 1915 New York Census. The address was actually 304 West 143 St not 134 St. It appears the manifest initially listed some different destinations. For instance my grandfather, Patrick Sullivan, was listed as going to meet his brother James. It was then changed to 304 West 143 St. The whole group has 304 West 143 St. Daniel Sullivan is also listed as going to a cousin James Casey living on Adams Street in Brooklyn but again has the 143 St address adjacent.

The 1915 Census for 304 West 143 St doesn't show James but several of the people at the address are from Tuosist. Maybe you'll recognize one of the names. 

I'm a Sullivan. My paternal grandfather was Patrick Sullivan from Ardea. He married Kathleen Dwyer from Adrigole. Kathleen came to NY in 1927 also on the Adriatic. Kathleen's mother (my greatgrandmother) was Ellen Sullivan (Keagh). Ellen passed away in 1949 in Adrigole.  

My maternal grandparents were from the area between Rathmore and Millstreet. He was Pat O'Brien and grandma was Hannah Sullivan.

Sorry slow getting back. How certain are you of the names of the men in that photo? I sent it to 3 cousins and 3 thought the man sitting with hands on his lap looked like Tim Galvin. He was from Ardea and his sister (my grandmother Helena) and sister Frances were already in NY.

If there are other photos of Gallivans I would love to see them. It is a bit confusing as to which generation is being referred to in many of these conversations and re-use of names doesnt make it easier.

One of Helena's sisters wouldve been a Mary and her mother was Johanna Gallivan (Gain) and father Daniel.

In following up the search for the Adriatic passenger, Daniel Sullivan b 1894?, son of Daniel Sullivan of Lehud, I found this birth record of a Daniel Sullivan, b 1 Feb 1871, in Ardea to parents Daniel Sullivan and Bridget Gallivan. Would this newborn be the father of the Daniel Sullivan on the Adriatic?

Hi Michael,

My dad identified the people in the photo. I don't know how sure he was of the identities. He passed away in 2012. The man sitting to the left was his father Pat Sullivan. He said the man sitting next to him was his uncle John Sullivan. Dad thought the man behind Pat was probably Florence McCarthy who later returned to Tuosist. I recently checked with cousins and it appears the man is actually Flor's brother James McCarthy. Dad didn't know who the man standing to the right was. 

Unfortunately I have very little in the way of photos or information. My father was born in 1933. His mother died when he was 11 and his father died when he was 16. John Sullivan died in 1943.   

John had an eventful life. He was known as the 'Swansea Boy" because he left home young to work in Swansea Wales. He emigrated to the US in Oct 1913. During WWI he was aboard a ship sunk by torpedo. After the war he became a NYC Fireman. John fractured his back in a work accident and while waiting to retire was killed in a random street robbery in Manhattan. His wife Kitty returned to Ireland when she retired and died in Castletownbere in the 1970's.  

I know what you mean about recurring names. The same names reappear each generation. I'm one of seven and we're almost all named after relatives.

I wouldn't know about Daniel Sullivan.

IrishGenealogy.ie is a really great site but is only as good as the original records. I easily found my 3 other grandparents but couldn't find Pat Sullivan. When I checked earlier the site said his birth probably hadn't been recorded. I've got photocopies of old records for Patrick and his birth varies not only by date but by year. I found a photocopy of an old scrap of paper apparently written to him by a Dr. Randal MacCarthy stating that his birth hadn't been recorded but would be. Recently I found the record on IrishGenealogy.ie. The record is attached. MacCarthy was the Registrar covering Tuosist and registered Patrick in 1919 as born March 4,1891. If I hadn't found that scrap of paper I never would have found him. So even though he was born in 1891 he is listed on the record for 1919 births. I've also attached his baptismal record which gives his birth as February 22nd. These 2 records and the other ones I have are definitely for Patrick but like I said I've seen a date range of 2 years for his birth.

I tried IrishGenealogy for Patrick's parents, Patrick Sullivan and Norah Shea, with no luck. The names are too common and I couldn't definitevely say any of the records shown actually referred to them.

Thanks for that link. It lists Johanna's death as 1941 but the headstone photo I wa sent, likely of her and Daniel's, says she died in 1931 although it is hard to read. Any insights or ideas? The age and her son Patrick's name match though. It is pretty limited information for a death record!

I had a great email exchange with Don Flinn. While comparing some info I had with Don I came accross something that might interest you. Years ago my aunt Eileen put together a rudimentary tree based on conversations with her aunts from Tuosist.

My granduncle Michael O'Sullivan married Nora Gaine in Ardea. I don't know if Nora is a relative of yours.

Another page shows my great great grandmother Mary Galvin. I've attached that page. Mary's brother Dan is listed as married to a woman named Gaine (Eileen didn't know the first name). Mary is the A column and Dan is the B column. I'm pretty sure Dan is your great grandfather and the people under B are those you were asking about. Take a look and let me know what you think.

Hi, I have just found this thread of emails on the Gallivans and related families.  I am looking for the family and Patrick Gallivan and Mary McCarthy.  I have not been able to find Mary McCarthy's family.  So far, finding a marriage record has been impossible.  Based on the baptism records, here are their children:

My grandmother was Honorah.  She died when my mother was 12 and so not much family history passed on.  The story goes that Mary was the first to immigrate to the U.S. and she brought the rest over one at a time. the son, Daniel, was known as Danny O'Brien Gallivan.  He immigrated and then returned to Ireland, I would imagine sometime around his father's death in about 1907.  I was fortunate enough to have found the family on a visit to Ireland in 1980 and then lost contact trying to be in the fast lane of life.  Some of the names you have mentioned sound familiar, and as you have said, the families loved to use the same name over and over! Just a note in response to the previous post by Kate Robertson.  Kate and I connected via DNA match on Ancestry.com not long after this post. 

We are related via her Mary McCarthy ancestor who was a member of the McCarthy family of Cummers West townland in Lauragh Tuosist, who are among my ancestors.  Mary McCarthy married into the Gallivan family of Derrylough Tuosist, so a different family to the Gallivan/Galvin family of Ardea. 

Rye-212 I thought Kathleen Robertson's family list of Mary McCarthy looked like the children of Daniel and Johanna (Gaine) Gallivan.
