My Great-grandmother is Bridget Donohue. She arrived in Chicago, Illinois somewhere around 1884. She gave her birth year as 1860/61 and named her parents as Thomas O'Donohue and Helen O'Neill of RENARD. I have no other information other than that she was Roman Catholic.  We are planning a visit to Kerry (also Foilmore)   for early October of this year, and I would love some direction on where to look for more information.

  • Hello again Janet!

Civil registration did not start until 1864 so I would use the same site I provided in your other message to look for Bridget's baptismal record and possible records for siblings.

  • Dear Roger,

Thank You for pointing me in the right direction. I was able to connect to a generous man in Dublin (from Valentia) that has compiled a database of the family records from Valentia from 1800-1900 - He was able to immediately locate my ancestors and that my great grandmother's parents were from Valentia, hoever she was actually born in Re(e)nard. I'd love for someone to reach out to him and get him involved in Irelandxo. I don't want to post his info but perhaps you could contact me?

  • Hi Janet,

I don't know if we've communicated before, but I was intrigued by your post.  My great-grandfather Patrick O'Neill was born on Valentia Island in 1853, son of John O'Neill and Mary Foley.  One of his daughters, my grandmother, was named Helen (Nell).  I was told by someone that we may be related to the Renard O'Neills, but I don't really know.  Patrick's siblings were John, Daniel, Maria (Muh-RYE-uh), and Michael  Foley O'Neill.  They all moved to Merthyr Tydfil in the early to mid 1870's for jobs at the steel mill.  The elder John O'Neill died in Wales in 1879 and his wife a few years later.  All of the children except John made their way to New York and New London, Connecticut in the mid 1880's.  Don't know if there's a connection, but thought I'd give it a shot.  Cheers!

My email is theresamcmackin@gmail.com if you can advise me how may b best to proceed.

  • My great-grandmother, Honora (Nora or Nano) was born on Valentia in about 1867 to John (Peter?) O'Sullivan and Ellin O'Neill, who lived in Lower East Tinnies near Chapeltown. Honora came to America with her brother, Cornelius, in about 1897 and married my great-grandfather, John Sergeant, in Greenwich, CT. She had a brother Jeremiah and many other siblings who all came to America save for one, (I believe Michael) who stayed on Valentia. I am coming to Valentia from April 29 to May 8 in 2019 and would be very grateful to learn any clues to find more information about Ellin and John. My direct email is stephaniemortonhandweaver@gmail.com. Thanks in advance for any replies. Stephanie

  • Hello,   I'd like to see you post that info on the "Valentía Down Memory Lane" Facebook group. They are a very active and welcoming group and there's always memories of the cable operators and more posted.
