I have been able to trace a family line through my fourth generation grandfather. But I am having great difficulty continuing past that point.

I have found a lineage line back to a William Wallce Woods, born about 1786 in Donghmore, Tyrone, Ireland. History I have found says he immigrated at age 8 to USA as a indentured servant. He settled in West Virginia, USA and served in the War of 1812.

I am hoping to find additional information that may continue my search back toward Scotland. There are family tales of the orginal Scott name being Wood, and the "s" being added when they immigrated to Ireland over some type of dispute. I have traced the family name the best I can and am told the name might be properly spelled Wod or Wode. I have reviewed the Donaghmore census and note about 496 individual Woods, with a family of about 6 in the Dnnaghmore roles, but am unsure how to proceed electronically.

I am happy to rest in Donaghmore, but if you have some guidance I would appreciate the information.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out! You have done extremely well to get back so far, congratulations on your hard work!

As you probably know civil registration began in Ireland for non-Catholics in 1845 and all of the population in 1864. Prior to this we are dependent on parish records. RC records for the parish of Donaghmore begin in 1837 and Church of Ireland records begin in 1777. So, for any birth or marriage event prior to that date there will be no parish record. It would seem that this is where you now find yourself as you believe William was born in 1786.

The only other records I can think of for Co. Tyrone that may be of some help to you are listed on this Co. Tyrone site:

Unfortunately the further back in time you go, the harder the search becomes. However I firmly believe in keeping up to date with new record releases and news through sites like the Irish Genealogical and Research Society and Irish Genealogy:

Please keep us up to date with your progress.

    Best wishes
