Hi,

I'm trying to find information about my grandparents, Thomas Alcock (born Athy 1899) and Mary Carroll (born??) who married in Athy in 1921. They left Ireland to live in London, England (don't know when) until their respective deaths. They had 8 children, including my mum, Bridget Mary Alcock, born in 1925 when the family lived in Chapel Lane, Athy.

I would like to trace my family tree, but I'm stuck because I know so little about them. I'd particularly like to know the names on my great grandparents, as this would help me get started.

Any information would be appreciated.

I found possible 1901 and 1911 census records for a Thomas Alcock who was 2 in 1901 and 12 in 1911. He was living in Athy. The Mary Carroll possiblities are numerous. I picked out 1 in the 1911 census in Athy but I have no idea if this is correct without more info. Note This Thomas had an older sister in 1901 but the 1911 census indicates that she died by 1911.

I found the 1921 civil marriage index record for Thomas and Mary. You can contact the GRO to get a copy of the record for around 4 euros. The actual record will show the names of the fathers of the bride and groom and where they were living in 1921. Go to the link below. Hit the link for marriage Certificates in English. A screen may come up asking for a User Name and Password. Hit cancel. The form should come up. Fill out the form and provide the following additional info: quarter/year of marriage, registration district ( Athy) and the volume and page number ( 3 and 268). Make sure you ask for a copy. The GRO will e-mail the copy to you if you ask.

  • Roger:

Thank you so much. I had found the Civil Registration Index, but it only gave me the date and place of Thomas & Mary's marriage, so I was stuck. But thanks to the link you sent me I have now applied for a copy of the Certificate. I can't wait to find out what it will contain ... watch this space - I might need more help!
