I am seeking information on the ancestors of Thomas Fahie, born 1805 in either Crinstown or Cranstown, County Kildare.
Thomas enlisted with the British Army in 1825 at Liverpool on the sailing ship Malcolm. He sailed to India where he joined the 1st Madras European Regiment.
He married Elizabeth Walsh, a widow, in March 1835 in Nagpur India and they had two children, Mary 1836 and Thomas Charles 1841.
Thomas died in India in July 1854.
Any information or suggestions as to where I may uncover some family connections will be gratefully received.
Regards
Paul Fahie

Hi Paul,
Thank you for your message.
I couldn't find any reference to a Cranstown in Kildare, however I did find Crinstown which is a townland in Laraghbyran civil parish , Co.Kildare.
Unfortunately, it may be difficult to find information on Thomas' ancestors as the reality of finding documentation pertaining to births/baptisms/marriages/deaths in Ireland prior to 1800 ? particularly in rural areas ? is that they simply may not exist. Also note that as the Church of Ireland was the official church in the country at the time, the bulk of information that does exist from the period is often from these registers.
Do you know what religious denomination Thomas was? Most Catholic registers are held locally, perhaps you could try writing to the parish priest for possible assistance. One website which you may find useful is the irishtimes. Here they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. Crinstown is in the Roman Catholic parish of Maynooth. To see what is available in Maynooth follow tis link:
For Church of Ireland records check http://www.ireland.anglican.org/index.php?do=information&id=63
You could also try looking at Thomas' s millitary records in case there is more information in them. For information on UK army personnel records follow this link:
